Ever have one of those days that just keeps getting better and better? My day starts with hearing some whimpering sounds coming from a drain pipe under the driveway of the Dr.s office next door and I say "WTF".  I get on my hands and knees to see what's in there, it's too dark to really see what's in there but I can tell it's a puppy. After about an hour of trying to coax it out with some food and dog treats I get it to come close enough to reach in and grab it out. Looks as if he may have been tagged by a car and was really scared. His front paw was kinda bent crooked and he wouldn't stand on it. I called Animal Control and when he showed up I was told that the dog was reported missing by a neighbor on the next block over and that one of her kids had left a door open letting the dog out 2 days ago. The woman brought me a case of Bud for my troubles. The second "WTF" came when I had a customer drop off his newly purchased 94 F-350 with a water leak. It appeared to me at first glance that it had a bad freeze plug behind the oil cooler. I take the front drive shaft out and remove the oil filter and can see this thing has been leaking for quite some time. After removing the oil cooler is when I just had to say WTF. The oil cooler itself is what is leaking, and some one has already tried to fix it by welding it back together. The only problem is that the oil cooler housing is aluminum and they used what appears to me as probably a 110 flux core machine to weld it with. The pictures tell the story better than I can describe it.A short time later I had a guy come up and ask if I could weld a bracket on his exhaust system. It's a 97 Dodge truck with a Cummins in it. The guy has one of those really stupid looking chrome stack for a Semi sticking up through the bed of his truck. I get down to look at the brackets and had to say WTF one more time. Whoever put this stack on the truck took a cut off wheel and cut out the bottom of the frame to install it. Once again the pictures tell the story better than I can describe but looks to me as another professional job done by a 110 flux core machine. I told the guy that I would not touch it and also that the frame can and will probably be breaking somewhere in the near future and that the truck should not be driven until proper repairs were made. So how was your day? Attached ImagesI am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!

Reply:Photo of dog in culvert is priceless!  Well done on the rescue.
Reply:That's one UGLY dog.  Would've done the same though.  Gotta thing for dogsExhaust thing is something that is very common around here.  Never seen how the kids do it, but never liked the whole concept.I've listened to diesel engines a good portion of my life, and I don't care to hear it anymore.  Why someone would try to make a truck louder, is beyond me."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:JUST WOW.  On both accounts. Those IDI oil coolers were know problems to begin with.  I can assure you that its leaking internally now and putting oil in the coolant. And those dodges would break the frame behind the cab when the frame was %100  perfect.   I'm amazed that POS even made it over to your shop.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:OMFG! Your kidding right? Normally I can say "hey at least you tried to do it on your own"  This time id say the same as Tony D, but on the ground laughing at this piece of work, until I curl up and become scared and realise how many other vehicles are on the road like that out there.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:On separate days either repair could take the cake, but today the frame has got to be it!!!Unbelievable!!Complete with saw cuts to get things started!! Good Luck
Reply:At least you got some satisfaction out of saving the dog and knowing that he was somebody's baby.  The other two goofs are good for a laugh and a smack in the back of the head.
Reply:I have seen some pretty nasty  " frame repairs / mods " on many vehicles . But the dodge mod takes the cake . Can not believe what some of these people were thinking when they cut into a frame like that .   Not to hijack the thread , did see one frame repair worse than that . It involved a high tension electrical tower ( those of us in Ontario will call a hydro tower ) on a corridor than runs thru our farms. The owner of a neighboring farm hit the leg on the tower (they are 60 plus ft tall )  with some type of big equipment  (The entire structure was bent.) They cut the damaged  section of the leg out ( 2.5 x 2.5 angle iron ) replaced it with new using  2 , 3/8ths bolts .  if I tried to pull one of these stunts I'd be pushing up daisy's . These kind of folks just can not understand the lives they put in jeopardy with these stunts .
Reply:Yup,  there's some geniuses out there.  Once had a lady bring me a Chevy LUV p/u.  Said it wouldn't pass inspection.  Told by the inspection station it had some rust on the frame.  LUV's were uni-body.  put it on my pit, and discovered the previous owner had put that aluminized tape over a very rusted out body, then sprayed undercoating over that.  I honestly don't know how the truck was holding together.  The body was shot.  Told her there was nothing I could do.  Would require a total restoration, too expensive.  She then gets real upset, tells me she's going after the guy she just bought the truck from and demand some of her money back.  I asked "How much did you pay for this truck?"  She replied "$50".  Another guy brought me an older Chevy Impala, asked me to cut off the trailer hitch.  Did that.  Then I asked why it was welded to the car to begin with (illegal in most states, and I won't do it).  This hitch had been modified many times to fit many cars this guy owned over the years.  A real engineering marvel.  Told me to hold on the hitch and he'd be back with his "new" car.  Came back with a 2 year newer Impala.  This time he had a stick with him.  Told me the top of the ball has to be this height.  Why?  Says he leveled his trailer on a concrete pad, measured up inside the coupler to the ground, and this is where he wants the "top of the ball" when the hitch is mounted on his "new" car.  I jack his much engineered hitch up, it hits the gas tank and the "top of the ball" is about 6" lower than his stick.  Also, the side members are about 4" narrower than the cars frame rails.  I tell him it's going to cost him more for me to modify this hitch, than it would be for me to sell him a new, factory made hitch, and install it.  He begins to go ballistic on me.  Telling me "You're not paying attention!".  I have a real short fuse with a$$holes like this.  I calmly inform him that this hitch "ain't gonna work".  He gets louder.  This is where my old Army ways kick in.  I can't post what I said to this idiot.  But, he and his Impala went down the road.Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.  But, I know where you're coming from.
Reply:Nice job on the pup rescue Dave but I'm with Sam on this one and think I know why the kids left the door open.  I've seen that breed before and can't remember for the life of me what it is but it sure ain't the prettiest pouch at the party. As for that Dodge frame - "You might be a redneck if. . ."  I hope someone informed the owner "Here's your sign!".MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:The dog story ended well, the cooler story ended with a chuckle, but the truck story...someone could get killed.  Who would do such a thing??  I've heard of cutting a frame to clear an exhaust pipe or header (motor swaps, hot rods, etc), but then you're supposed to box it again and make it stronger than it was before...not leave a chunk missing.  And those overlapping cut marks!  I'm amazed the truck hasn't torn itself in half right there!
Reply:i was about to say, IMHO its a little foolish to cut the frame to mount exhaust. kinda comprimises the structural integrity. i just hope nobody tries to pull a trailer with that one.I break things for a living...
Reply:And my wife wonders why I insist on going over a used truck I am thinking about buying with a fine toothed comb, "I don't buy cars, to me they are worthless" I will spend a good deal of time crawling around under, over and in it while at the location it is being sold at, weather its a dealership or at an individuals house!Cause dear, there's people out there that somehow get by everyday without brains!Don't blame you on these, those where definite WTF's.#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!

Reply:Does that mean you guys don't like my stacks?I promise I didn't hack the frame to do it and I do have a muffler on there. Reply:The frame is just unreal.  A couple of extra bends and it could have dropped UNDER.....Good grief you just hacked 80% of the exhaust system off, not like a couple of bends was going to restrict flow....What's wrong with people?!
Reply:took me a min to realize it, but this guy has a repo rig in the bed of that dodge. I bet he tried to yank a repo and lifted the front end off the ground, repo broke free and slammed the front end down. I know the mega cab dodges and snow plows don't get along real well.  The frame flexes to much behind the cab, causing the rear glass to pop out.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:Yes..... quite a day!!!The frame rail that was cut could be repaired but it will take a bolt in plate with grade8 bolts. I do not know if that is a hardened frame. Some frames cannot be welded on. That exhaust job is very scary. Makes me think about how many of those exhaust jobs were performed. Reply:I did a ton of frame modifications on mini trucks. I did some custom work on compacts too. You would be amazed at what people will do to their cars and trucks. And they will drive them like that. I had one kid take all the leafs ouf of the leaf pack in his Nissan truck. It wasn't low enough so he took out the rubber snubbers. It was low enough. Problem was that now the axle housing was slamming into his frame rails. He brought it over to me to do a "step notch" or "Bridge Notch" or some people call them "C notches". Anyways, I get under there to see what's what. His frame rails are actually broken all the way through on one side and the other side had the top of the frame rail flexing as a hinge sort of. His bed was holding the whole thing together. I so wish I had pictures of those jobs because nobody ever believes me....I had to weld up the frame before I got to cutting it up to modify it.
