So, I'm welding to 3/4" A656 Gr80 steel.  I've used Metalloy 76 wire in the past and was just shipped Metalloy Vantage wire instead and the supplier is saying it is about the same.   So my question is will the Vantage bond to the Gr80 plate as well as the Metalloy 76?
Reply:Have no clue what these wires are, but was thinking that they should conform to one of the AWS filler metal specifications, so if you would look at this, you may find that they meet the same spec. or not, and this may give a clue they will function similarly.
Reply:try this, http://www.hobartbrothers.com/products/Both wires conform to AWS E70C-6M H4Metalloy 76 has higher manganese and silicon levels than Metalloy 71 with slightly lower spatter and higher strength. The increased deoxidization level allows for more tolerance of mill scale, with fewer root pores than Metalloy 71. Metalloy 76 is recommended for single-pass and multi-pass welding in flat and horizontal positions with 75-95% Ar/CO2. The wetting action is better than solid wire, minimizing cold lap on heavier sections of steel.Metalloy Vantage is a metal-cored wire with fewer silicon islands than other metal-cored wires. Weld bead toe lines are almost completely free of silicon deposits, eliminating troublesome cleanup time and effort. In addition, the weld bead face is virtually free from silicon island deposits; those remaining islands of silicon are almost selfpeeling. Together with exceptional low spatter rates, Metalloy Vantage will save time and money spent cleaningprior to painting, coating, or plating. The wire is recommended for single-pass and multi-pass welding in both the flat and horizontal positions. The recommended shielding gas is a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide, with aminimum of 75% argon and a maximum of 95% argon. Arc characteristics improve with richer argon gases while spatter and fume levels decrease.for other manufacturer's wires of the same type:http://www.select-arc.com/comparisons.phphttp://www.select-arc.com/product_sh...ect70C-6.shtml
Reply:while you guys are on the subject , That metalloy 76 is awesome stuff. For those of you who havent used metalcored wire before, it is the sh#T!  I use it when I need to lay alot of weld down in a hurry - its like working with fluxcore without the flux. Its got a high 90's % deposition rate . Also try the trimark 777 - fluxcored with the smoothest welds I've seen.  They cost more upfront but the time savings is huge.
