CAN anyone tell me the benifets of welding Flux core in the CV mode? I am running a Lincoln Power Wave 455 with Esab 7100 Dual shield with CO2 1/16" wire. Thanks for your responses!
Reply:CV is made for wire feed, weather cored or just wire.  Constant voltage keeps the arc a consistant length.  The voltage adjusts the arc length, the wire speed (amps) control penetration.    The CV power supply changes current as the arc length changes.  With constant current, as the arc length varies, the voltage changes.Make sense?DvidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks David.
Reply:if you dont mind ,why are you useing fluxcore on a pw455ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:i want to know too
Reply:Chopper and bue, what is it about fluxcore and the pw455 that you are questioning?   It comes to mind that the pw455 may be considered extremely expensive overkill for meatloaf flux core welding.  But, maybe it's not meatloaf welding, maybe it's some very critical, high deposition, application that benifits from the sophisticated wave form manipulation of the pw455, coupled with fluxcored.  Maybe the pw455 is the only MIG they have.  Maybe precision systems will enlighten us.Inquiring minds want to know.
Reply:it just seams wrong to me run to flux core with a top end welder like the pw455ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:My Power wave might be a bit of an overkill however having to choose between 8 higher end MIG welders and given the workload of the Powerwave it was a no-brainer to load that machine and its water cooled gun to accomplish the 1 3/8" double groove coded pressure weld. And I know what your going to say next... I don't have sub-arc at my disposal. I hope this answers the question posed of me!
Reply:i have welded 60" reservoirs in spray transfer worked just fine and did not have water cooled anything we tryed fluxcore on 10 reservoirs and all leeked like a bubble makeri still think the 455 is to nice a machine to put fluxcore onbut it should run it real goodChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Chuck,    That doesn't sound right given the excellent shielding properties of the flux-core wire. We use this process on all of our cover passes for ASME code vessels that require RT-1 (among other NDE) and haven't had any problems (knock on wood). And like I stated before I have the benefit of excellent machines at my disposal so I am in a win win.
Reply:I would like to add also that we are not a production shop so the versatility of the Power Wave is essential to our business.
