Hi all, can I use the Mapp/Oxygen torch setups from home depot to bend 1/2-5/8" round bar? Will it work, how long might it take? Any advice is appreciated
Reply:You mean those cylinders that look like a propane bottle?  Probably work, but will use most of the gas  for one bend.A propane weed burner may also do the job.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:can you rent O/A setups? I just cant justify buying a setup yet

Reply:Id take it to a local scrap yard and see if they would it for you.  If its something portable that is.  Call first.  Or, you could run it over and turn zap loose with it.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:kind of a tough call... which would be harder, finding a scrap yard to heat/bend it or haul a dozen or so oxygen bottles in your vehicle.  the MAPP would be easy, it liquifies... the O2 on the other hand is just pressurized... they dont' last long.
Reply:Ok so what about just using MAPP?

Reply:Well its a round bend about 45 degrees. Thats all I needed to know,,,they suck lol
Reply:A single 45* bend in 1/2 to 5/8 round bar, given some time a regular mapp blow torch will do that. I'm talking the kind without oxygen. If you have a shop vac that can blow as well as vacuum or some other blower you could do it with a bag of charcoal.
Reply:you can do it without any hoop-la just build a fire and stick in the the coals, it will take about 10 minutes at the most to get it red, then bend it around a piece of pipe, or what ever shape that you want. Lock the one end into something and bend till it gets tough, then reheat. Depending on the size of your coal bed, you could do it all in one shot. Just don't let it get too hot, it will burn the metal, looks like a sparkler!! Just dull red is fine, remeber it will get hot all the way to the end you are holding. So the what works best is use a long piece, like 6 foot, that gives you lots of leverage.    I fool with  that when barbecuing just playing around with after dinner. It is a rather large bbq though, about 36" around, all wood fired. But any thing will work, and wood is found for free. Unless you live in the city, then just find the homeless with their 55 gallon drums, just give them a pint and I am sure they will let you heat your rod there>
Reply:I spent $50 on a Bernzomatic MAPP/Oxygen torch setup to burn a 3" hole in a piece of sheet metal and to get a feel for OA cutting.  Their oxygen tanks are expensive and don't last very long, especially if you have no prior OA experience.  I did use the poor performance and high cost to justify buying a plasma cutter to my wife.TeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
