i asked this question over on the miller board and got some odd responces as well as several others that were also wondering the same thing. so i figured i would do the same here to see what i get from you all as well as to inform thouse that are also wondering. i have been cutting mine at the red line most of the time but also cutting it at the green line. wile the majority thought i should skip cutting it at all and just regrind to a point, i have to wonder about the oxcidation process or the loss of oxcides however you want to put it. as i have gotten much better at TIG i dont foule it due to poking it into the puddle or hitting it to the filler nearly as often so i have likely used up most of the oxcides and on the times i manage to run it till it starts to arc wander i know the oxcides are goon. so how far back do i need to sharpen to get to fresh tungsten compleat with all its oxcides intact??my thoughts is to stick with cutting at the green line as it would seem this should be far enough back to get fresh tungsten. i just want to see what others are doing??? and get the discution out there for the others that are wondering. Reply:I never cut mine before re-grinding.. One way to avoid that is not to contaminate the tungestion..  I take a new one and break it into 3 pieces and go from there..But to get rid of the contamination without cutting the end off you can use a belt sander on the O.D. thats still "stock" size......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:well some day i hope to have your skill so as to not contaminate it. i have made it to the wander stage a few times now so i am getting better.so when you hit the wander stage you just grind it back to a point or what?? how much do you take off in the regrind process once you have used up the available oxcides?? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:If it is contaminated, I snap it behind the contamination. It all depends.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:In all honesty I would just regrind it like it is and go from there...The shiney stuff is aluminum from contamination..The darker color after it is no big deal..a little sanding with the grain on the aluminum and your good to go.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I just re-grind to a new tip. The arc is fine after for me. Unless you have alot of extra cash, cutting way down or breaking off a 1/4 to 1/2 inch after the contamination seems wasteful.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:ok so now whats the concern of contamination your grinder with the contamination from the tip??i use a diomand wheel to grind my tung. so if i grind off the cantamination have i just contaminated my wheel??if i cut it off just behind the contamination then the contamination never makes contact with my wheel. it would seem that if yoiu have a dedicated grinding wheel and you use it only for tung. but grind the contaminated tip are you not adding aluminum or steel if thats what you contaminated it with to the grinding wheel and then grinding it into the tung. as you make the tip???am i over thinking this?? seems the majority just throw it on the grinder contamination and all and make a new tip and get back to welding. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Oh man, I think I can actually help you.  Went throught the same contamination youve got.  Turn your post purge up (like 5 or 6 seconds).  When the tungsten is still hot, it reacts to the air and you get that blue shade.  One of the fella's here told me about it.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:I think your right about over thinking it, but your like i am i do too alot.. You ok with just regrinding.. The difference between your multi-purpose grinder and your tungsen grinder is that you dont take that really dirty rusty pieces of metal to you tungsten grinder. Even though you contaminated your tungsten by touching your work piece, your work piece shouldnt be as dirty as other metal that you throw on you multipurpose grinder.I never had any problems with just regrinding and in the begining i touched the work peice a lot too....
Reply:Just grind.
