Hi I need some help on the welds here. These are folks off a BMX racing bike and what I would like to know is has this been welded by a qualified welder? Is there anything wrong with the welding, if so what is it? Will the bike be safe to ride on a bmx track, doing 5m jumps? Thanks Stephen Jack Attached Images
Reply:there allright i suppose, second last picture theres a hole, the welder should have grinded that down an did it again because i wouldnt leave that like that if i was doing it.plus looks like on the first picture his start back is not good, they should hold though,we hope
Reply:Are those off of an old Torker?Probably fine if they have held for 35+ years, except for any rust that may be in them..Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Just don't land on your front wheel.
Reply:Looks ok. Honestly it looks like the welds you would see on a huffy at walmart.
Reply:Hey, they're track tested...An alternate place to ask this question is the frame builder's forum over at MTBR.com . Those folks would probably make the same general comments though.. These aren't the best welds in the world, but probably acceptable for any Walmart bike out there. If you are nervous, inspect the welds often. On a bicycle, generally things crack, and then over time the crack degrades. Under load, cracks will often creak. Listen to your bike when pedaling.. it should be absolutely quiet. What's that creak noise? better check that out pronto. Pay close attention to the frame welds just aft of the headset. and if you are really nervous, have Walt make you a new fork. He does excellent work. (See MTBR postings for his contact info..)Good luck, stay safe.zipLast edited by zipzit; 09-07-2011 at 09:36 AM.
Reply:The welds look like a good welder did them, but was in one hell of a big hurry. Like he was in some Chinese sweat shop and his master was holding his feet to the coals. From the look of that fork the steerer tube will bend first.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:those are ****ty forks, lol i used to race for the nbl state #1 3 years, i have enigma forks which they don't make anymore but buy some answer scythe carbon forks.
Reply:to me there is porosity and undercut. neither is acceptable.if they will work is to be seen .

Reply:A simply sanity test in any situation. Do I trust these welds with my balls? If not look for another beefier fork. Of courseyour face is going to take a beating as well, but it's the boys that will take the real force
Reply:Thanks for the replies. The folks are off a 2011 GT Power Series Expert ridden 4 times, with a restriction on the 5m jump. The restriction on the jump says everything. Thanks again |
