This is the axle on a portable livestock chute. It raises in a fashion so that the base of the chute drops to the ground and the axle is no longer supporting the weight of the unit. Does anyone know what kind of axle this is and how it works? Are there any other options for this sort of application? Any pictures would be great! Attached Images
Reply:I saw this post earlier, and was sure our resident farmhand, Sam would have spoke up by now. But, as I was looking at new posts, I didn't see his name at all. Where are you Sam, out in the field with a filly?I am interested as to how this works as well.Just my opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:Most are mounted with an offset to allow the spindle to pivot on an arc up or down. Imagine an axle with a 8" drop spindle mounted on it's side. When it is rotated it is either lifting or lowering the frame. The winch is used to pull the spindle back thus raising the chute.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:yes, the whole axle will turn. This is kind of difficult to explain in words, but the entire tube will turn. Normally the axle is mounted to the frame in another tube so that it will turn. The winch hooks to a bracket and rotates the whole axle. Most have a locking pin to lock the axle in transport mode.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:We have a head-gate very similar to the one in the picture but ours is hydraulic. the one we have has trailer jacks on either side of the axles and you just raise them up till the tire is off the ground and then the whole axle pulls out of place it does have a locking pin for transport |
