I would like to build an aluminum water tank (potable) for my camp trailer.  Is there any special precautions to take as far as drinking this water? Do you clean it with something or put some special paint or epoxy on the inside when you are done so it will be safe to drink?Millermatic 252"Don't worry, he's got a welder, he can fix anything"
Reply:I know water coming out of clean aluminum containers tastes nasty. Aged seems okay. Not sure about several days tho. What do they seal cans with I wonder?
Reply:Mainly, I want to increase my capacity a little bit by adding a tank and valving it accordingly.  They didn't use all the available space I had.  It was fine with just me, but with the wife and kid, the water just doesn't go as far as it used to!Millermatic 252"Don't worry, he's got a welder, he can fix anything"
Reply:you would better off using stainless to make the tank
Reply:Been forever since I have kept a travel trailer.  The last one I owned had the older style round Al. tank that you pressured up with air.   I hadn't thought much about it but was inside the compartment & realized there was lots of wasted space.I measured it up & found a poly tank that I nearly had to use a shoe horn to fit in & installed an on demand 12V. pump.    Nearly doubled my water storage.I was always afraid to drink the water from the storage tank because I have well water. (no residual chlorine like is always in munisipal water) We always carried a couple 5 gal collapsable water cans for cooking & drinking.Back to the subject of this thread.  I agree with Roadkill use stainless.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more

Reply:I cut down one of the old aluminum tanks that had a pump to pressure them up to fit crossways in the back of my truck years ago. I camp in some places where water is hard to come by so I wanted the extra capacity. I transfer it to the camper tank with a small 12 volt compressor. I've used this tank for 12 years and haven't had a problem with taste or anything else. I also have a water well. I figure if I drink the water from the well every day it's OK to take with me to drink. I also fill the camper tank with it. I have a brother-in-law that does the same thing. I did fill the tank with a strong bleach solution and let it set for several days after cutting it down. I usually fill it with bleach water before use, let it stand an hour or so, drain it, and then fill for use.

Reply:There's also been some tenuous links between aluminum and alzhiemers. Although that's mostly cookware.Still, I would stick with stainless or find a poly tank that will fit the spot. Save some weight as well.
Reply:Well.I wouldn't worry too much.  If the cola companies can put phosphoric acid and fructose and all the other crap they but in there and beer companies put an alcohol based substance into it a can,  I would think that a aluminum water tank would be just fine.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
