With no buildings going up I need an idea for something I can occupy myself with. Any suggestions and NO, I DON'T NEED A WELDING CART. Hee hee. I'll buld the best suggestion and post pics. By the way. I posted some time ago asking for suggestions for getting my MIG out of the truck without busting a nut. Well I made a ramp an as soon as I get it painted I'll post it too. Reply:A crane or reels for welding leads.
Reply:My thought would also be a rack. Get the ladder out of the bed, give you a place to hang leads, the ability to cary long stock etc.I've seen dozens of good ideas looking at what other guys I have seen on the road have done. I'm guessing from the looks that the tops of the side boxes open so you will need to do the attachments to the sides of the boxes rather than the tops. No big deal several comercial racks mount that way.
Reply:move the cables before you get pulled over. ladder rack is prob. a good idea to. You could alsouse a "headache rack" behind your rear window.Go hot, or go home!

Reply:A rack could also provide some protection for those exposed oxygen and acetylene valves.  I'd hate to see one of those get clipped on a trip through the drive-thru.
Reply:build a better woman...good luck..lol
Reply:ps the DOT would have a field day with you on those exposed tank valves, here you must have caps on tanks to transport..
Reply:Modify your service body to lower the height of your bottles.  Makes it easier to put the safety caps on too.  Argon & O2 bottles can be laid over to help protect them. And build a "back window guard" that will protect the bottles if you can't modify your service body.  I've seen many ladder racks that were made from 1.5x3" rectangular tubing.  The tubing was bent & bolted to the back & front of the service body.  Could probably build an inexpensive bender for the tubing out of 10" pipe & some scrap steel.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:Not building a perfect woman. Could be some serious liability issues. Got the ramp painted but I think I'm getting the swine flu. When I driving  I put the cables inside the tailgate as I've already had an officer tell me my plate was blocked. Tank valves are less then 7" high and McDonalds drive-thu is 7' 9" so I'm good. Got to go puke see yaLast edited by KWS; 05-09-2009 at 11:48 PM.Kevin's Welding Service.Miller Bobcat 250.Millermatic 212.Hypertherm Powermax 600.Victor Journeyman torch set.Speedglas 9000XL
Reply:Well here's the ramp. Works great, not too heavy and fits in the back with the tailgate up. With 90' of # 8 cable I can really get far away from my truck/power source. Reply:I wonder if there's a way to store the ramp underneath, like a U-Haul truck.

Reply:Big 12 bolt in the way and not enough clearance between the bed and fuel tanks. I don't need an uncluttered bed as I have a trailer to haul steel or finished pieces that also has a jig/welding/cutting table built on for ornamental and whatever. Also, I don't have my mig bottle chained in with millers cheesy dog chain. I have two 5000 lbs ratchet straps and the bottle is very secure.Last edited by KWS; 05-12-2009 at 08:10 PM.Kevin's Welding Service.Miller Bobcat 250.Millermatic 212.Hypertherm Powermax 600.Victor Journeyman torch set.Speedglas 9000XL
Reply:i'd say build ya a headache rack, but a ladder rack would probably be more important right now.  really the first thing you should be worried about is to take this time and get some business.  time off isn't neccessarily a good thing.
Reply:I really don't want a ladder rack as I have a trailer to haul long steel. I usually don't pick up steel anyway. It's delivered and paid for by the GC. I'm going to make a short headache rack to protect my regulators but this setup works great for what I do. Besides it's heavy enough already with all my junk.  As far as looking for work I'm on it. Reply:Hey paweldor,Where did you get those valve protectors? Been looking for them online for sometime but no luck. Really like the one on the right and I don't want to cut my caps if I don't have to.Last edited by KWS; 05-14-2009 at 05:11 AM.Kevin's Welding Service.Miller Bobcat 250.Millermatic 212.Hypertherm Powermax 600.Victor Journeyman torch set.Speedglas 9000XL
Reply:Any LWS will have those caps.  I got two sets of them.  They are pretty damn expensive for what they are.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:I don't see a trailer-hitch BBQ in the back of that truck .....Well, since you've got the ramp ............... why not a small minibike or moped with metal box "saddlebags" to hold small parts and welding equipment?  (Also for those quick run to the McD's for lunch!)  Motorized bicycle would work, too .... Then there's always the Cruizin Cooler - a motorized beer cooler ....Okay, maybe these aren't "working" suggestions, but all work and no play ....Maybe I can build a bridge to nowhere and get an Obama stimulus grant. Where exactly is nowhere? Can't find it on google maps.Kevin's Welding Service.Miller Bobcat 250.Millermatic 212.Hypertherm Powermax 600.Victor Journeyman torch set.Speedglas 9000XL
Reply:Actually, NoWhere is in Arizona (I'm not kidding, either!).  The whole "town" consists of a few trailers, a gas station, and a small general store, so you can go NoWhere ............  Come on, what do you expect from a state that has names like Surprise, Tortilla Flats (Population: 6), Gila Bend, Buckeye, Twin Arrows, Wickenburg (home of the Institute for Factual Diversity), and Needles?
Reply:Needles is in California.  Just up the road a way's from me in Yuma. And we already have a bridge to no where, it's called the Ocean to Ocean bridge crossing the Colorado river here in YumaMarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Or the London Bridge in Lake Havasu .......Okay, so what was this thread about?  Ideas!  okay, anyone got any more ideas on what to do?"Recycled animals" are always fun, building animals out of discarded auto parts, broken tools, and scrap metal.  "Recycled vehicles" are good, too.Goofy is good.  Anything you can make that's funny is worth making.  Even if what you've made serves no real purpose, entertainment value is everything.
Reply:I cut my caps and made valve protectors. But UDOT doesn't require them as long as your regulators are attached. I know it doesn't make sense but that is utah law. I went to praxair to buy some  protectors and the salesman got out the  UDOT hasmat code book and showed me the rules. So I just bought a set of replacement caps for the ones I cut up.. Well now I can go through the drive thru worry free. I made page one on google adds and buiness is picking up. Not to mention a lot of local fab shops are closing down. I not taking any pleasure in this but I may be one of the few left standing when B.O get done ruining the economy. All my stuff is paid for many times over and I still have a substantial operating budget for upgrades and consumables. Good luck all.Kevin's Welding Service.Miller Bobcat 250.Millermatic 212.Hypertherm Powermax 600.Victor Journeyman torch set.Speedglas 9000XL
