Just trying to get an idea as to what a decent price for DOM tubing is. I'm looking for 1.5 OD with a .188"wall and 1.5 OD with a .120 wall, and have been quoted around $6.00/ft. Just want to make sure that that's about inline with a decent price. Also anybody who can get it for less due to bulk orders or something along those lines in SoCal, I'd be happy to buy it from you, you make a few extra bucks for ordering me some tubing.
Reply:Call B&B steel in Santa Maria. They had the best prices in that area I have ever seen. We ordered 800ft of 2" sq. from them not long ago, got a good price. Now, do you want true seamless 1020 DOM, or mild 1018 tube?? If you are making a rollcage, the strength difference is negligible, the design will be more important. I have found that for the cost of DOM, I can get 4130 from Summit steel for the same price. ( I saw your post on DR ). Paul. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:for 1.5" .125 is about $4.50 a foot in Ohio
Reply:That's on the high side for a full length in my opinion.  If its a cut length, that's a different story, at least in my neck of the woods.
Reply:Paul, I'll give B&B a call, I have to be in Santa Maria in a few weeks anyway, thanks. I usually get my metal from Industrial Metal Supply in Irvine as they are only a few blocks from the shop space I've been using, but their prices can be great or a total rip off depending on what you want, so I figured I should ask around. This is for a couple bumpers, front and rear on my truck, and fronts for 2 other trucks. I could probably get away with mild steel but I figure the extra strength couldn't hurt for mashing into rocks or nerfing people on the 405.
Reply:For 1.75" x .120" DOM  I'm paying $2.60/ft locally here in Mi.,   $3.10/ft for cut lengthsLast edited by TSOR; 05-26-2007 at 09:29 AM.

Reply:Hmmm, I mite meed to look into a little bit of 4130 then. I "use" my bumpers a lot, droping the Rover 4ft onto it's nose isn't too far out of the question, and I'm headed for the Rubicon this summer so it's almost a garuntee.

Reply:Originally Posted by SupeShops around here won't even bother doing work with DOM for the most part, as the cost of moly is almost identical, if not less in cases.
Reply:OK, it looks like there is a B&B metals in Santa Ana just 4 miles from the house, so I'll head over there after Memorial day and see what they quote me, I assume it will be as good a deal as the Santa Maria location, in wich case I can probably just go there for all mt metal and not have to deal with IMS. I found a few other places around SoCal with good prices on tubing, but they were all too far away to make sense. Driving 60-80 miles round trip to save $40 on a stack of metal suddenly becomes not such a great deal.As long as we're on the topic, what's a good tig rod to join 4130 and DOM?
Reply:ER70S2 for moly to moly and mild to moly here.

Reply:Nice, I've got plenty of 70S2 on hand allready, so it looks like I just need to get the tubing, and wait for my bender to arive and I can start a post in the "Projects" section.
Reply:I guess I'm the only ignorant one here, so I'll speak up.... what is DOM?--Mike
Reply:DOM is very expensive here in Las Vegas.Oh wait, we were talking about the steel, weren't we?DOM is "Drawn Over Mandrel" tubular steel.  It has precise dimensions, and doesn't have a welded seam, like the basic tubes.
Reply:Okay, so I Googled it and found out it means "Drawn Over Mandrel".  From what I understand it is a specific tubing manufacturing process that's prefered over other such processes????  Am I on the right track?--Mike
Reply:LOL; Mac702, the other dictionary definition had something more relavent to the Las Vegas scene....said something about S/M and bondage.....but that's a differnt forum --Mike
Reply:Basicly DOM is a different proccess for making tubing, it leads to a better quality higher strength tube. Other than that I don't know a whole lot about it, I just need strength, and lots of it.Paul (Rojodiablo) I owe you a beer and a burger, I stoped by B&B in Santa Ana and inquired about their prices, $3.11 before tax/ $3.35 out the door for .120 wall 1.5" DOM, I grabbed 2 sticks and a buisness card, and found my new steel supplier. They don't stock 4130 or any .188 wall so they couldn't get me a price on it untill tomarrow, but I'm stoked, saved a hair over 50% from what IMS quoted me.
Reply:Awesome news. For 4130, if you have any trouble with a price, let me know. I am going to be placing an order on 4130 to cage my truck in a week or 2, whenever actually. Summit steel quoted a good price on 1.75, so I would assume their 1.5" price would be pretty good, also. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm going to just use DOM for the whole thing, I'm going to run 2 tubes for the main blade and a 3rd tube as a nerf-bar/ light bar, that gets atached to a winch cradle made of 3/16, everything mounted double sheer to the chassis wich will get modified slightly to eliminate the airbag sensors and prep it for the eventual engine cage. The Rover has become a never ending project, every time I finish 1 project I think of 2 more.
