I'm looking for recommendations/ opinions on different grinding wheels.    For the most part  I use 5" and 9" wheels 1/4" thickness.       Seems when I buy good wheels, they last to long, which inturn means very little metal removal for the amount of time and effort in grinding.       Then if I buy the cheap stuff, it breaks apart or becomes imbalanced etc..    So anyway, a while back I bought a bunch of 5" wheels that said " LA DIAMOND" on them fronm a surplus place.    They had a purple and white decal on them.   I loved them.   They would get a little chip in them if you were careless or got some chatter.   But the material removal was aggressive and the wheel broke down fairly quick.     I don't know where to buy more of them.     So I'm open for suugestions for something similar to how I described the LA Dia.   When I ran out of them, I bought a box of the Pferd, in the general ferrous model, they are real good, but just slightly lasting to long and slightly not enough metal removal.      I don't like SAITs, there metal removal very slow.    I use the 1/8 pipeliner though.     So does anyone have any reccomendations for 5" and 9" wheels that fall in that fine line of not fracturing apagt w/ a lil chatter, and not spending alot of time and effort removing metal?
Reply:I've tried many brands over the years and now only use Walter brand for everything: grinding wheels, zip wheels and chop saw. More pricey, but requires half the effort and lasts twice as long. They have a "Double X" grinding wheel that's real aggressive at metal removal.
Reply:I find that using a "tiger pad" removels metal the fastest.I use norton Chargersthese work in 90% of my applicationthe other 10% i use nortons grinding disc (no sure of model name)

Reply:I love Pearl Abrasives Redline Wheels.  I have never seen a grinder remove metal so fast at such a controlled rate.  If your grinder has the amps and power it will keep on spinning and digging.
Reply:Carborundum Gold, they cost a little more but are well worth it.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

If your xbox is still under warrenty you should get it for free, if it isn't you may have to pay for a new one.

Reply:I go for SAIT when available. Watch out for the Long Lasting SAIT, they'll make you think you bought a bad batch of Nortons or something. Got so much glue they won't cut. I've used a few of the Radnor from Air Gas. Altho they are made by Norton they seem to be more consistant. The off the shelf Nortons Just weren't consitant enough to be trusted. I've still got a couple/three hangin around I'll have to use sooner or later."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Well it sounds like I've definately need to find out what this double x is.     The metion of redline was good, I tried one once, seems everything was richocheting and it the wheel got ate up super quick,  but it worked good.      Yea Sandy, I think I bought some of them saits in 9" w/ to much glue once.     I buy the smaller saits for pipe, or would be good for hairy interupted cuts.    There tough wheels, some of the electrical and water utitlty companys in my area are only allowed to use about two diff brands of wheels for there work, probally for safety reasons for the most part, and sait is one of them.
Reply:I am going to have to try the double X discs too.  (walter website shows 4 dealers locally for them) My 10amp dewalt grinder that i just got eats up regular 4 1/2 inch wheels like nothing.  my 5 and 6 amp grinders they did fine in.   Anyone have suggestions on the flexible grinding wheels?Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Im gonna get shot for this, but I like he harbor freight wheels. They are cheap and for the mild steel work that I do, they work great.

Reply:For my small grinders, I use DeWalt.  For some reason, once a year or so, Lowe's marks their wheels down to ±$1 each, and I stock up.  I have a dozen or more 7" that mount on a hub, can't remember the brand.
Reply:I'm about to try some of the Flexovit stuff. Especially the 14 inch chopsaw blade. Northern Tool carries them and I have a store just a few miles away.Lincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175
Reply:I've always used SAIT when I can get them at work, never had a problem and they dont come apart like cheap ones will. DeWalt discs have never been anything but a nightmare and a painful one at that. They seem to come apart quickly and their cutting wheels have failed rather spectacularly in my hands, had a 14" one come apart within minutes couldnt even finish one cut, SAIT blade lasted several hours of cutting and never had a problem.
Reply:Metal SAIT 1/4" Never had a problem, and I don't have girly arms either Never tried their long lasting.Dewalt = Junk and don't even waste you time with their bi-metal blades either.Which ever you choose, make sure the RPM's are adequate for your grinder.Last edited by skelley521; 09-14-2011 at 04:49 PM.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
