I welded a crack in this housing today. I'm trying to get the hang of taking pics and getting them on here. Welding is much easier! Attached Images
Reply:so now that you've mastered the art of taking and posting pictures, what are you gonna do with that pump??I hope you don't work for some airline company and intend to use that pump again for any type of aircraft system, because I'm taking a flight to Colorado next week!!!
Reply:Good looking repair.I did one that looked like that for a skid steer about 5-6 years ago, its still in the guy's rental fleet. What filler did you use? Did you pre/post heat, temps? For me the machining was the worst part, picking up the threads and cutting the tube fitting taper. Did you remachine?Peter
Reply:A friend of mine took it off a bobcat for a client of his. It was spraying fluid pretty bad. I told him all I could do was find the whole crack and go from there. I was surprised to find that it didn't go all the way through ( about an inch deep though) but the threads would have to be re-cut by a machinist. At $800+ for a new pump, he figured it was worth a try.I went over the area with a tig torch at a very low amperage the burnt oil from inside the crack exposed it quite well. I used a coarse carbide bit and an inline die grinder to open it up. and repeated the process until no more crack appeared from the tig torch. Then I pre-heated the whole thing to 400 deg. and filled up the groove. The hardest part was to flow material onto the threads without melting the peaks off. But like I told him it's already shot, ya can't really hurt it... I may have to build up the whole hole inside to be bored and threaded, but that's the machinists call. Unless you're flying bobcat-air you're safe for now.maniak
