Hey yall!! Well, last fall I started building a BBQ from an old air compressor that that I replaced. It was one of my first ever projects (note the pigeon-toed legs) but Its sure has been fun to make and I just put the finishing touches on it here recently. The next thing to do is to sell it, but first, I obviously want to make sure its food-safe. Ive never cooked anything on it, but I have filled it with charcoal and let it burn itself out overnight on two different occasions now, but I want it to be clean enough on the inside to eat out of. There isnt any paint or anything in there, just about a decades worth of compressor oil. What do you experts say about this? If it weren't a BBQ it would be easy, engine de-greaser and a garden hose to get it clean, but since it is...Most of the inside has started to rust (YAY!!) which Im assuming means the oil has burned out of most places there. But not all of it, so Im assuming there's still oil in places in there. What do yall recommend? A couple more bags of charcoal and let it burn, or can I use something like oven cleaner, etc. [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:A food safe cleaner to remove grease and oil? Easy Off oven cleaner. It's not the best on paint however.Simple Green is biodegradeable, so it might be Ok. I'd look closer at the label..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Well we don't get to see the insides, how tricky that might be.I might try something like Dupont 3919S, that is the solvent you use to clean cars before painting them. Will definitely suck up anything that is hydrocarbon based big time. Then followed by firing her up over night. The solvent is flammable and anything left will burn off. Don't think it will really hurt you, lots of body shop guys have had some for lunch. Then oven cleaner if that is your durthers and then maybe a good wash down with Dawn dishwashing. And to be pretty a cleaning with a belt sander and the grit belt that works best. Maybe a paint up after all that work for the best sales asking price.
Reply:charcoal starting fluid and dawn soap mix them together till itis thick like pudding and a scrub it in hose it off and light it up till the logs are completely gone it should be safe after thatLincoln Power Arc 4000 Thermal Arc Fabricator 252 iThermal arc 186Thermal Arc 26 tigTweeko 200 amp spool gunHobart AirForce 400WP-17V-12R

Reply:i think I have seen simple green in one of the big bbq stores out here, and either lowes or home depot would have something. I have used I think it is called big purple that I bought at wally world, as all degreesers in Cal have to be bio-degradeable, then light up some coals and let it burn no one sick yet, and if so, no more than a case of the trotts.Ron
Reply:for got to mention that I do wash it off with some water, then coals to burn the rest off. |
