If you're in the welding business and need insurance, I'd suggest you check out Alterra Excess and Surplus Insurance Company. I'm switching tomorrow - from my current $2,800/yr to $1125/yr. This is for a $2 million general liability / $1 million per occurrence policy. This price basically covers non-bridge structural welding, not trailer hitches, cranes, aircraft, road vehicles, boilers, and liquid or gas pipelines. I think most of these are available for expense above the base rate - don't know how much as I don't have a need for these currently.I'm not trying to sound like an advertisement, but a $1,700 cut in annual expenses is a big deal. The underwriter my agent will be using is Royal Oak Underwriters, Inc. which is based in Richmond, VA.Before our new, "this isn't a general welding question" person comes around, as you attempted to in another of my threads, this is an answer to quite a few questions about affordable welding insurance that have come up here in the past. So I will ask you in advance to butt out and read another thread. Hope this info helps some of you business owners out, or at least shows you there's hope!
Reply:That's good to know. I guess you do onsite work.2 years ago we switched from Liberty Casualty to Farmer's and was surprised to get the same coverage with a deep discount. Overall mine went from $11k to about $6K. I have 10 people on the payroll now and am a job shop.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:That's a good price. I'm slighly higher with Peereless atm. Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:that is excellent.
Reply:Good deal. Many times it's what you say, not what you do, that can change the price. I was lucky and my agent understood what questions to ask and what words to avoid.Words like "assemble" rather than "fabricate". Fabricate tends to imply you are designing something rather than simply following instructions or prints and the liability goes up. I can go up as high as 40' on an extension ladder, but if I say I use scaffolding my rates jump. I'm safer on a scaffold 10' off the ground than I am trying to work off the very top of a ladder, but the word "scaffold" is all it takes to jump my rates. This can be especially true with small guys that do a lot of odd jobs. A careless comment can get you into a huge rate jump for something you might do just once or possibly not at all. There are several areas I avoid, not because I can't do them, but because if I added that to my coverage for even one job, my rates would eat up more than the profit might total on 10 jobs..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
