I received an e-mail from a forum member last night about a thread I made comments in a few weeks ago http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=22016 In the e-mail my methods, abilities, and experience was questioned. Some of you may know me from other forums and have seen some of my work, obviously this person has not. So instead of sending him pictures through the e-mail I figured I would post up a few of my trailers built over the years. If this person has any more comments or statements, please feel free to post them here publicly. Reply:This next set is one of my personal favorites. Customer called about building a trailer for his ultra lite aircraft, all I got from him to work with after a number of phone calls back and forth were a couple of pictures and some basic dimensions. Luckily, I got it right the first time and the plane fit perfectly and customer was off on his way to Texas the day after being built. Now, to the person who questioned me and my trailers, these are only a drop in the bucket as I have built over 540 trailers to date. I think I am Qualified to answer a few questions about trailers every now and again. Reply:As I have said before you do awesome work.I'll toss out the generic question many may think of...Do you have plans that you work from or do you design them yourself? If you design them yourself is there a rule of thumb that you go by or is it more use this for trailers of this size and that for trailers of that size? I kinda have an idea what your answer most likely is, but figured many will be curious so I'll just ask first. Thanks BTW for posting up the picts. Now to just decide which one I need to order from you....

Reply:That's a powerful array of practical trailers. Nice to hear someone considers the customers needs when building a trailer, a great change from "Well, that's what we build"One question dabar39, the grey trailer in shot 1, 6 and 7. I figure it's the same trailer and you add the sides and split mesh tailgate when needed and use it as a vehicle transporter without them otherwise. Is that correct? Also what do you fill the deck space with when you add the sides etc? What's it's main purpose. The ultra lite trailer looks interesting too. Is most of the fuselage suspended on the orange tie downs? Is it a sprung trailer, as the gap between the top of the tire and the frame looks small?"One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:Thanks for the reply.  It's always nice to learn from a master.  I understand the pipe & pin hinge.  I don't understand . . . Reply:great looking trailers.  I like the one with sides that double as ramps.  makes for alot of options.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.Originally Posted by dabar39I looked through most of my pictures and don't see any, but I do them basically the same as the tailgate hinge itself. I use 3/4" i.d. pipe for the hinge barrels and 3/4" cold rold shaft for the pins. I weld a washer on one side of the pin and drill a 3/16" hole in the other end for a hairpin to hold it in place for easy removal if necessary. I also drill and tap them for grease fittings. I also put some hinge barrels on the sides of the two piece gate so it can be stiffened with hinge pins as well. hope that answers your question with out too much confusion. Dave
