hi i tig weld mostly for fun but today i set my lincoln tig 300 up in stick mode and ran almost a box of rod through it i wanted to know is 6013 only for ac? how can i tell it's a Merriam-Graves brand. i also used e7018 on dc+also if i wanted to weld stick overhead like welding legs to a table do i need to put the welder in dc- i am new to stick welding any tips would be grate thank youJason
Reply:The 6013 I use is AC, DC+, or DC-. The brand name is usually at the end of the stick where you place it in the electrode holder. To weld overhead, you need an all-position stick like 6010, 6011 or your 6013. Reply:thanks i really need to get a cutting torch but can a stick welder be used ro cut with?thanks
Reply:I think they have specialized and expensive rods for it. Other than that, to carbon arc gouge, you need an attachment.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Or you can take whatever cheap rods you have in their largest size and crank it up a little. It's messy as you'd imagine but it'll work in a pinch. 60XX rods are best suited for this, but then I'm a Lo-Hy snob anyway.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:yes, you can cut with an arc welder.  Some of Lincoln's older books from the 50's use to detail it.  I know it was in one of their farm projects books I have.   Take a 1/8th (6011 works best) and turn your amperage up far beyond where you would be welding.  Strike an arc and as the metal puddles start pushing the rod thru until the material blows out.  then just manipulate your rod so that it continually blows thru material.  Kind of push the rod in a forward slant, and basically keep "chewing away at it until you have cut what you want.  It helps to actually wet the electrodes.  Helps keep them from burning into.  Do I reccomend this?  No, not with the wide array of cutting methods out there, but it can be done and I will admit that I have even done it once or twice when I was on a job and in a BAD tight to cut some varying bar stock and had run out of torch gas.   It works, it's just not pretty or quick. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:6010/6011 cuts just fine...Not clean, but fine.    300 amps on a 3/32 rod will do the trick.
Reply:Tractor supply and other places like that have cutting electrodes.  I have never used one.  I HAVE used carbon rods for gouging in an electrode holder and a blow gun.  It does work, but darn, the right tool works much better.  I think weldingdepot.com has the setup for $114.00.  You still will need the copper coated carbon rods for it.  Your 300 amp machine should gouge like crazy.  Electrodes with a 1 in the 3rd place of the rod # means all position.  6011, 6013, 7018..... You can weld overhead, it takes some practice.  Just a little less heat than flat and I use a slight push or forehand method.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:thanks guys yea i will save and get a torch kit. i saw some torch kit's bran new on ebay for under $60 but im worried that i could get hurt if it blew or something that's why id rather Waite and buy a good name brand one like victor or smith. i saw a smith at abco yesterday for $275 -the tank's but it was more then i had to spend. but that's what i am thinking of getting. if anyone else has any good brands for a good price please post.thanks
Reply:Just to add a small bit, do not change polarity for overhead. All the rods you mention will weld overhead, with practice!City of L.A.
