I saw this in canada last year on a fishing trip.  i snap a few pics and forgot about it until this year trip.  This they upgraded to a 100# tank.  This should make you go holy s#$%.I watch a guy fill lawn mower tire and the 4-wheeler with this thing.enjoy  Daye Attached Images
Reply:As a kid in Tx., most of the farmers eqpt ran on butane and they always had a hose in the PU to air up tires with. Course they had to hook it to the vapor side of the tank, not the liquid.                         MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:That's pretty wild  If he had 100-140psi of air in that tank, it's a wonder it didn't blow the line right offmla2ofus....... I was at the tire shop last year, and a guy limped in with a flat that he filled off of the propane tank that ran the pickup.  And it was hot like it is right now.  Could you imagine if the tire blew and struck a spark when the rim hit the highway  I imagine the gas would dissipate long before it could blow.  Be interestingThe guy did tell Tim that it had been filled with propane.  He let the pressure out of the tire in back of the shop before repairing it."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I'm assuming that the propane cylinder is used as an air pig and he/she is not actually using propane to fill the tires? I can't imagine anyone being that stupid.I've got the same setup, two actually. One as an air pig and one I geared up as a sprayer with a down tube in it for spraying undercoating.Propane is under, I think 200 psi when charged.....MikeOops, just re-read Samms post...I guess people are that stupid, Darwinism at it's bestLast edited by mrmikey; 06-28-2009 at 06:43 AM.
Reply:Humm...  Not to nitpick, but many would consider it "stupid" to use a propane tank for an air tank as well.  Isn't that the point of this thread?  I think it's pretty scary how often rigged pressure vessels show up on this forum - pressure vessels are not something to play around with!  Oh, and from what I found on a quick search propane is stored at around 100 PSI not 200.  Maybe the tanks are static tested to 200?

Reply:The pressure inside propane containers varies quite a bit depending on the surrounding temperatures. Anywhere from 10 psi for you folks in North Dakota in the winter time to 250 psi for the folks in Yuma AZ in August. .   They are some pretty hardy tanks.

Reply:my dad has one setup like that, it works for him on the acreage, hes been using it for 2-3 years now no problems.
Reply:20 years ago they sold a kit to convert your propane tank to an air tank. I had it for 10 years never completly got the propane smell out.
Reply:Propane can't be sold if the vapor pressure exceeds 200#psi. That is what the tanks are rated to handle.

Reply:The classification of those tanks is DOT 4BA 240 which should be fine for the average air tank, ...
Reply:A few small excerpts from an interesting read. No I haven't read it all. Enough to tell me how hardy and rugged these tanks are tho."Performance and integrity of the propane cylinders were established by burst testing each of the 236 testcylinders. The minimum design burst pressure criterion used here is 960 psi, or four times the servicepressure of 240 psi, consistent with typical DOT requirements. The measured burst pressures werecompared to predictions by visual inspection and hydrostatic expansion test to determine how well theypredicted low failure pressure performance and how conservative their predictions were. Visualinspection predicts integrity based upon visual appearance of excessive corrosion or damage. Althoughvisual inspection predicted failure (rejected), 196 out of 236 cylinders (83.1 percent), only 8 of 236cylinders tested, (3.4 percent) actually failed at pressures below 960 psi. The oldest cylinder tested, 60years old, failed at 1400 psi. Visual inspection was successful in rejecting each of the 8 cylinders whichfailed below 960 psi. In fact, the lowest failure pressure of a cylinder that passed visual inspection was1235 psi, more than five times the service pressure. The test results indicate that these cylinders aredurable and robust and that the current visual inspection method is an effective and very conservativecriterion for identifying damaged or weakened cylinders.""The service pressure of 4BA cylinders used for LPG service is 240 psi. Although DOT does not specify aminimum burst pressure for these cylinders, DOT typically specifies a minimum design burst pressure of4 times service pressure, or 960 psi. In LPG service, DOT requires that these cylinders be subjected to ahydrostatic expansion test to twice the service pressure (480 psi) every 12 years, according to proceduresin CGA C-6, Methods for Hydrostatic Testing of Compressed Gas Cylinders.""CGA S-1.1, Pressure Relief Device Standards for relief valves refers to a normally charged cylinder at130F. For the purposes of this investigation, NPGA advisors suggest that a typical “propane” mixturewill have 95 or more percent propane, with ethanes and butanes making up the majority of the balance.Fuel meeting industry specifications will yield pressures ranging from 255 psi to 302 psi at 130F,depending upon the mixture of hydrocarbons present."A PDF download.http://www.propanecouncil.org/upload...t_Final(1).pdfLast edited by Sandy; 06-30-2009 at 01:08 AM.

Reply:denrep et al,search the forum, I posted previously about mercaptan odor in LPG tanks.Like here http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ight=mercaptanShort answer, acetone to wash it out then air out well then wash/rinse with plain-ol bleach then rinse well and then protect tank inside with desired steel coating.Or acetone wash then air out then neutralize the mercaptan (smell) with general-purpose home-made handy-dandy SpecialSecretSkunkOut mix.  Also works on LPG mercaptan as well as skunk methyl/butyl thiol mercaptans.1 qt plain 3% H2O2 solution1/4 cup baking soda1 tsp - 1 tbsp liquid soap/detergent/shampooMix and apply, do not store or try to store the mixture (it bubbles and releases oxygen).Rinse tank and then apply desired steel coating.  The best laid schemes ...
