I had bought one of those Sander/Grinders a few weeks ago, and since bench and counter space is at a premium in my small shop, I needed a stand for it.as some know from one of my other threads, I recently snagged some scrap steel for free. So, I started putting some of it to good use today! The stand only needed to be 12" wide and 21" long and 30" tall.so I started with some of the angle 2"x2"x1/8", cut on my band saw.BTW, from another thread, who was it that said you could not cut a nice clean angle on a band saw to make a corner miter Hmmm! Well, heres the proof that you can!I finished the main frame work today, and will be using some more of that scrap on this tomorrow, I will cut a top plate, add some gussets to the legs with a shelf.Heres the pics, and in no particular order! In one of the pics, the closup of the leg weld, I had to bridge a wide gap as I wanted the legs to angle out from the top to give it more stability, I cut an 85* angle into the legs top and bottom, and tomorrow I will add supports to the bottom of the legs so I can use those 4 adjustable feet I saved from an old washer we threw out a few years ago. Reply:Pretty tall table ........ I guess you're going to be on stilts? Seriously, nice work on the stand.  Nice straight cuts, good welds.  I've also seen truck rims with a pipe and plate welded on for a stand.  (Then again, I know a buncha rednecks ....)
Reply:Nice work, can I ask where you got that square/protractor from?  I've been looking for something like that.
Reply:Thanks Spyguy!Yeah!I know a bunch of those too, then again, about 15 years ago, when my mom and dad bought a new house, I helped level it and take the wheels off of it! Thanks Antibling!I picked that set up at a garage sale a few years ago, it has several attachments that came with it, it is as handy as a third hand and twice as useful!all it says on it is, at one end "Made in USA" and at the other end "Stainless".So I can't even tell you who made it!I have seen some similar, I think it was Harbor freight or maybe Northern tool, can't remember!#1. Reply:looks like you really took your time to get the top frame square! nice job!

Reply:I bought a cheap combination square from Harbor Freight for use in the welding shop.12" Combination SquareYou can spend anywhere from $7 to 300 on a fancy Starrett combination square, the centering heads are nice when marking the center of something round.Starrett description guide“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!”
Reply:Yep!That is exactly like mine bwbeast!Without this thing, I couldn't do the work that I do in building the parts that I make for garden tractors, all the bending and odd angle cuts would be impossible without it!And yes!I use it to setup the band saw for angle cuts! The scribe that came with it has dulled over the years, now that I have that sander grinder, I can finally put a point back on it, it was too hard to try and do on any of the regular grinders!#1. Reply:Thanks norcalmike! One thing I cant stand is a wobbly and crooked stand.I was just going to buy one, but even looking at the Craftsman stands they sell now, they are cheaply made and move around to much, and I wanted one that was solid and built heavy enough that the machine wouldn't try to walk away from me while running and adding a little pressure while sanding or grinding!#1. Reply:Very nice.  You did a really good job at getting those miter joints to join nicely.  Like I always say, it's not what you can buy, it's what you can build!
Reply:Thanks JC!I think instead of welding in corner gussets to hold a flat plate for the lower shelf, I will wait until tomorrow and visit our local scrap yard and see if they have some smaller like 1" angle I can use.I have a few short pieces, but not enough to get the job done.I think it would be better to weld in a full frame anyway to make this more rigid, made upside down so the shelf will have a lip all the way around, then set a plate inside it, so any extra sanding disc pads or boxes of belts can sit under there without falling off!#1. Reply:Ken, think of adding a tray halfway down the legs for accessories.
Reply:Thanks transit! But that is what I was talking about in the post just above yours, I guess I should have said tray instead of lower shelf! #1. Reply:Thats a pretty stout looking stand, Great work!Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy!
Reply:Well, its official, my welds ain't sh!t.I know my welding needs improvement, and I need more practice, and I thought that they are at least passable, but sh!t?I just had a retired pipe fitter in my shop, and he was looking over my stand, and suddenly he hollered, "These welds ain't sh!t" loud enough for the whole town to hear!   Are they really that bad?#1. Reply:Ya know Ken, It's like this. I am certified aws 2 through 6 g. I have been certified in nuclear power plants. AWS 3 4 and 5 g. So it isn't like I can't weld. But when it comes to your own stuff,  some times you say, it's gonna hold. I am not getting paid to build a table or a stand. BUT I need a table or a stand, YESTERDAY!. So if my beads aren't perfect on that project. Oh well. Does it work? Will it hold the 50 to 500 lbs. I think your welds are perfect for the job they are asked to do! Way to tight of a miter cut. Did you at least chamfer them? That help eliminate the build up of the weldment and makes it purtyer. Heres to a mighty fine sander stand. Reply:Maybe thats what he was yelling about, he was saying that I had way to much build up!No I didn't take the time to v it out, I set my welder on a bit higher/hotter than I normally would have for this type material, and was counting on the weld penetrating deep enough, because after I finish welding everything, I am going to go back over those on the top with my grinder and grind them smooth to the surface, so I can add the plate top!I know my inside corners look like crap, I had to build up to bridge a 3/8" gap that was left from angling the legs like I did, and working an inside corner was never one of my strong points anyway.#1. Reply:If I am building something like that, I usually have a little sloppier mitre cuts. Gives me a 1/8 inch or so of gap to fill. works great, for me any how.Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear
Reply:Screw him.  Is the table in your garage/workshop, or in his?  As long as you're happy with it and it works for you, who gives a damn what anyone else thinks?
Reply:Got a little more done today!I decided to make a drop in/weld in plate, instead of just covering the whole top with a full sheet!I found enough scrap 1"x1/8" angle laying out behind my shop to make the lower shelf bracket, I had to cut it up and grind old welds and left over metal off of it before I could use it.But this thread  wouldn't be called a stand from scrap, if it didn't require some extra elbow grease now would it !I cut the drop in plate from some more of that found scrap with my PM 600, fit it up, welded and ground the welds down and now the top is ready for the final smooth grinding/sanding,"after I visit the hardware store and get some more sanding/grinding pads, I forgot that I had used the last one previously" Heres some pics! Reply:Thanks for the moments gclamp and spyguy!Actually, I appreciated the old gents candor! It made me take a closer look at my welds and some of my corner cutting habbits that I have fallen into using, and made me realise, that if I am going to do this professionally, I'd better get my act together and stop being lazy with my work and cutting corners to try and get things done faster! My dad had a saying "If something is worth doing, its worth doing right"And then of course he would follow that with "You better do it right or I'll beat your a$$" #1. Reply:Heres the finishing pics. The first is just after I finished sanding the top and blending the metal, I installed the bottom shelf, and primed it!Then just after I shot it with some paint.I decided to forgo the feet, and save them for something else, as is, this stands rock solid! Reply:Thanks gclamp!I should of drug it outside for that finished shot, so it would show how dang shiny it came out.You can't really tell it in these pics, but it came out nice!It weighs about 60#, so I don't think I will need to worry about it going anywhere when I use that sander, and with the legs angled as they are made this very stable!#1. Reply:Just got thru reading the entire thread Ken as I didn't see it while we were in Alaska last week and earlier this week.  Very nice job and big of you to take that gentlemen's blunt criticizm in stride and use it to improve your skills.  Most of us need to follow your example perhaps more often than we'd care to admit.Sorry to hear about your sand blaster nozzles.  Would have made short work of tough job.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Thanks Duane!I was planning on replacing that blaster gun and hose anyway, I bought the thing about 10 years ago, and it could use a new one anyway!Yeah! The bad habits we fall into, can sometimes come back to bite you in the a$$ if your not careful, so the old gent was doing me a favor, since my dad isn't over here to kick me in the rear when I need it! The funny part was when his son that was about my age, turned to me, grinned and said, don't worry, he yells at me all the time like that for the same thing!I think everyone needs someone from time to time to kick em in the rear, to remind them of how things should be done, or just to keep them in line!HeY!How did your trip go, got pictures?#1.
