Wow, prices have dropped.  I just went and picked up 20ft stick of 1x1 16ga for $11, and two 20ft sticks of 1.5x1.5 14ga  for $20 each. The guy at O'Neal Express told me that their computers are "tied into the market" for pricing.  He said that when they check a price it is by the market value at that exact time.  He told me that demand is heavier in the mornings, and that if you want a better price, come at 2:30, they close at 3:00.  At the end of the day, demand is low and prices drop.Don't know if that"s true or not, but it"s something to keep in mind when shopping for your projects.
Reply:At those prices, you can't afford to buy the salvage stuff and try to clean it up.

Reply:Thats about $1.96 per pound, for 1" with a wall thickness of .120 weighs 1.13# per foot.If that is structural carbon steel, it does seem pretty high, but of course, it depends on where and how you are buying it!If you are getting it from a box store or a hardware store, that is about normal, as you are most likely buying a small quantity, and the convenience of it dictates the higher price. If you buy from a large quantity distributor, or wholesaler though, I would do some more shopping around!#1. Reply:So Sam you didn't plant anything this year? was it due to the late spring?Nice selection of steel Sam. I don't have my selection as neat as that mine is in piles everywhere at my farm shop. At the cnc shop everything is stored using a computerized tracking and inventory system. Lately I have been getting lots of steel for my farm shop just by  driving around and folks bringing scrap to me. Also building projects in our county usually have alot left over from projects and they look for places to dump it.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:Guess I missed the sale ...Discount Steel in Minneapolis Minnesota is where I usually get drops at 50 cents a pound for many months. Just gave them a call and it has gone up to 65 cents a pound. Certainly the wrong way for me.

Reply:I'd like to pick up some steel for some projects I have in mind. The projects are centered around tractor implements....3ph forks, toothbar for fel, receiver hitch(male/female sq.tubing) and other things as well. Right now, I just have some matress framing that people have thrown out. would you mind offering up some common or typical sizes I should look at getting for these projects or even what you find just really handy to have around?I'm thinking it would be best to get it in 20 ft sections?Tks, I'm definately looking to get some sq. tubing for receive hitch set ups. Tom

Reply:When someone is tied into the "Market", that means that they are using replacement cost pricing, just as a lot of gas stations do.  Their cost of steel doesn't depend upon what they pay for it, but rather what it will take to replace it.  This keeps companies with a viable way of replacing steel when the market upswings.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I just paid $200 for 72' of 2"x2"x1/8 wall mild steel tubing + 24' of 3/4x3/4x0.064 wall tubing, including a $20 delivery fee (way worth it).  This was from Mid City Steel in MA.I'm getting plate and sheet drops for anywhere from $0.30/lb to $0.75/lb depending on material. (mostly $0.30/lb).  I'm buying drops from a regional steel supplier that has an online store selling their excess from larger orders.  So far I've bought about 400# of this material.Matt
