At least I guess that's what you'd call it seeing as I'm not up on boatish.Doing some work on a generator and one of the main propulsion engines of houseboat today and this rudder control cable anchor that was about to break away from its mounting was on the list of things to do.Due to the loose anchor mount and routing of the rudder control cable, the cable housing would contact the crankshaft pulley at/near the full to starboard position.Remnants of the cable anchor bolts on the left, upper rudder shaft support member lags on the left. The upper rudder shaft support member is another story for another day.And this is what it looked like once out on the deck. Not much left or long for this world.Stand by for the fix. . .MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:. . .that went like this:Original pivot ball stud removed from the original cable anchor and cleaned up ready for the 'new' anchor.I was in a hurry to get it built, back to the yacht club and get it installed so I failed to get more 'build' photos. 4" long piece of 3"x3"x1/4" angle, 3-1/2" long 1" tube and 1"x1/4" flat bar for gussets. 'Glued' together with the MM200.Before and After. Built a backer plate for the new one due to the current condition of the anchor support structure that is now tentatively scheduled for a repair in the near future. Yes, the holes are offset to match existing mounting holes.New anchor installed and cable re-routed to clear engine crankshaft pulley.Used self-vulcanizing tape to seal the damaged control cable housing. All I can say is it was one hot day down in that engine hole!! Thanks for looking.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:the self vulcanizing tape is great to keep in the glove box fixes a lot of things (radiator hoses, power steering hoses, etc) and doesn't slip and leave a residue like electrical tape. It is a little pricey though. oh yea nice repair and I believe you when you said it was hot down in the hole.

Reply:It's important to put a little 3M 5200 on every screw that goes through wood encapsulated in fiberglass. This will prevent the wood from getting wet and prevent the screws from rotting out. If you're working with wet wood, the only thing that lasts is monel but nobody can afford that.

Reply:Thanks guys. My knowledge of and experience working on boats is very limited and must say I got a good laugh I read the replies from from Sam, Sandy and DSW this morning.Deffinately not familiar with that 3M 5200 but will look into it as she (the owner) wants to repair the upper rudder shaft support fastening structure. I suggested removing the 2x6, grinding down/out the fiberglass to clean material, adding some new wood and apply fiberglass cloth/resin to secure it in and install new 2x6 shaft supports with new lags. I used longer galvinized ones yesterday in an attempt to get into some good material that proved to be less than what I hoped for but right on with what I expected.Does this sound reasonable or should I be looking to do something different? Based on what I know this looks to be about as good a plan as any but I'm open to suggestions from the more experienced. BTW, the craft is obviously in the water and can't be drydocked.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Although I believe she (the owner) would go for the the new Morse steering unit if necessary, I also don't see shy the exisitng arrangement can't be left in place as it's the support structure in question not the steering system MM.
Reply:I didn't ask but would guess the unit is possibly of late 70's to 80's vintage but then I don't know watercraft. The twin small block Chevies are of the old 4-bolt valve cover design and as such what I'm going on for my vessel age guess. The owner originally bought it to live on 24/7/365 but couldn't get insurance for that purpose (??) so she now has a small home near here and just spends weekends and short periods of time on it. Stays moored at the yacht club most of the time as a result.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Him and his roommates had already moved all thier stuff out when the owner said he was going to keep thier security deposit because he said the place needed to be repainted (BS). Since my friend still had the key and had 6 days left on the lease while he waited for one last final, he thru a painting party. He went to Goodwill to just grab some POS clothes to paint in. The tux was tacky, cheap, and looked good for the party!

Reply:Typical underhanded way for the landlord to get the place painted before a new tenant moved in. Repaint is usually the property owners' responsibility unless the place was really trashed beyond normal 'wear and tear' at which point holding back on the deposit would be justified. With your buddy being a college student it was easy for the LL to say it needed painting because after all, you know how male college students and appartments go.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Duane, as was stated earlier, 3M 5200 is very adhesive. I only use that on my boat when I know The Item will never be removed.
