Advice needed to stop plates warping

Hi,I am hoping somebody can help me, I have asked before but I attached the wrong drawing.I am wanting to have some small metal fabrications made for me. They are basically the same as a MetPost Bolt Down fence post support (see attached drawing).I am wanting these units to be fabricated from 2mm Mild Steel plate. The units are simply constructed by welding together the bottom plate and the top collar.The problem I am encountering is that the bottom plate is warping during the welding process, even when the two pieces are clamped together.If I can resolve this problem I am hoping that I will be able to have quite a large number of these manufactured on a continuous basis, therefore I am quite happy to invest in constructing a suitable jig if this is the answer.If anybody has any suggestions on how to remedy this warping and advice on the best form of welding to utilise I would greatly appreciate it.Thanks.Mintabull Attached Imagesweldingweb.pdf (92.4 KB, 83 views)
Reply:Use MIG and make the throat thickness/ leg length as small as you can, make a spacer (might need to experiment to get the right thickness)  that's about the same size as the collar, put it between 2 of them, clamp/bolt them together back to back, weld one side, then the other, then leave to cool before you unbolt.Failing that, just weld them and put them in the press when you're done.Just as a side note, 2mm mild bends quite easily, will they not pull it back flat when you fit them?Last edited by Baila La Pinza; 11-03-2011 at 11:32 AM.

Reply:Only other thing I could suggest is to use very small wire ..say .035 inch ( .9mm) or smaller.  Use a argon gas mix high in argon to limit spatter.  The small weld in the new print indicate someone was thinking.
