OK, never did wear plates. they are on a 1999 Geith excavator bucket, both lateral and side plates. will use 7018 rod and will preheat and wrap with blanket. My question is. Is it ok to weld the new ones with out removing the old ones? Some are almost gone already. In those places I will add 3/4'' AR400 and where there is material left I will and 3/8'' AR400. Also, the customer would like to piece in small pieces over the old side plates rather than try to make the radius...is this going to be effective? Bucket is 2' wide.
Reply:I cut the old stuff OFF.   Start fresh and only have YOUR welds holding the new stuff on."Before I put new stuff on, I need to remove all the Old Sh*t"   The new wear plates will not fit right anyhow.  Old ones are worn on a taper correct?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Yes. You are correct. One of them is on a taper, one almost totally gone, and the third one is even.
Reply:Take the old off before putting the new on.  When one of the welds cracks on the old liner, and it will, your new liner will go with it.  Not to mention the poor fit up over the worn plates."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.

Reply:And see if the customer will go for putting hard rod on the areas of the wear plates that wear fastest ie: the leading edges.                                 MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
