What do you guys do to keep surface rust off of a steel welding table?  I heard somebody say the occasional rub down with lineseed oil is good. Thanks,Adam
Reply:New steel. New pass new steel across it and it gets oily.  Linseed would be bad. About like coating it with shellac. You want your table bare and maybe even clean altho mine hasn't seen clean in quite some time.
Reply:Linseed oil is for gunstocks.  I wipe on WD-40.  It evaporates eventually leaving a light film that resists rust formation.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:I'm new to all this so I know nothing but I tried this stuff, Corrosion X.I used it to coat my car's undercarriage to resist salt corrosion in the winter. It leaves a very thin, non tacky film.Any opinions on this stuff?
Reply:Oil and welding do not go together.  Use a Grinder and lightly go over the table.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:if you wantit to stay bright & shiney, you coudl always go cheap and get you a 4x8 sheet of platinum or titanium. that stuff don't corrode too much. he he he. honestly, at shool, we never worried about it. a welding table is made to get dirty and stay functional, not look pretty. if the rust starts to get too much, you coudl grind it, or take a sander of some kind (random-orbit sander works nice for me) with some 80 grit or 120 grit to the table top. this will keep the gouges in the top to a minimum and it'll still get the table clean.later, andy
Reply:I always used a wire wheel on a grinder to clean up my table, then little spray with WD and a quick wipe down. Easy, cheap and works well.
Reply:They make a product for wood working tools that protects the steel tables (table saws, ect.) that works very well.  First sand down the table with a random orbit sander with a fine grit (the finer the better but if you have rust start low.) then apply an coat and whip off when dry.I thing it is called "top coat", it comes in a spray can.Me!
Reply:I would be careful about any coating on a welding table, most coatings aren't going to like getting hot slag splashed on them and will just burn and leave soot all over the table just keep it dry and sand it when you think theres too much rust.
Reply:No oil. Just keep it clean and dry, and as mentioned brush, sand or grind as needed."deader than downtown alviso on a friday night"
Reply:Unless your table lives outside, rust isn't going to be a big deal. Oil on my table would upset me a heck of alot more than rust would. The surface of mine is hot rolled steel, and the scale does a pretty good job of holding back any rust.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:if the table is not going to be used for a while,  put a coating of any oil [motor oil, cutting, machine, drain oil]  then when you need to use it, break open the laquer thinner and clean it off.
Reply:I don't use anything..I just Acetone it before starting for the day.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:A light coat of black paint. Been doing that for years and it works well. You can still get a ground through it and it doesnt burn so no soot problems.Plus, you can see layout lines better.

Reply:Originally Posted by TEKNope. Just put on a fog coat and it dries fast and isnt so thick so you wont have grounding issues or stinking problems. It does work. Been doing it that way for years.
Reply:I use anti-spatter spray, my table doesnt rust.
Reply:While I was in the textile business coconut oil was used on all bare metal.  It's rather hard to find now and quite expensive.  The precision welding guys used dishwashing soap, blow dry with air then wipe with acetone to clean weld tables.  Everyone else just used it as is.I have a hot rolled table top and just hit it with the grinder and acetone. I also use a 1/4 in aluminum over lay for welding aluminum I hit with stainless brush and acetone. Heaven help anyone that messes with that plate.
Reply:All I have ever done is just slide the grinder across it. If you work on it very much rust isnt a problem and you have to keep the spatter knocked off.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
