I picked up these welding rods at an auction.  They have a soft pink flux with no writing or identification.  Any ideas what they are?Thx,Steve Attached Images
Reply:Is the rod magnetic or non magnetic? Some aluminum stick electrodes have pink flux. You said the flux was soft.If it is for aluminum the flux may just fall off the rod if left uncovered.Does it have the name "missile weld" any where or on the container?Last edited by Donald Branscom; 11-06-2011 at 01:34 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Do they have a dot of paint on the stinger end of the rod?  Might get an idea from that, but all the rods I have in my stock have no paint marking but I have seen certain brands "labeled" that way so you can tell what's in the tube without having to yank a rod out.GeorgeEdit: I just searched and found this down by post #7http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...fy-welding-rod!Might get you closer to an answer. Reply:I think it is for silver solder, I got some too from some long ago place. That is how I got mine marked. Actually I remember them being used as such. That job got messed up.This site shows them.  Listed as 2000FC silver solder.http://www.weldingrods.com/#!silver-solder
Reply:Yes, they are magnetic. They did not come in a container unfortunately.Thx,Steve
Reply:Breast cancer awareness rods? Sorry, I don't know what they are either, but I did find this using search...http://www.welding.com.au/Uploads/Do...L-16%20PDS.pdfLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175
Reply:So, if they are Silver solder then they are brazing rods?????Do some brazing rods look just like electrodes?  same length, w/flux, and bare at one end?Thx,Steve
Reply:No, there is not paint on the stinger end of the rod.So far I think I've seen two possibilities. If they the Silver solder then then torch should be able to melt them?If Stainless electrodes, then I should be able to find some stainless try them with the arc welder?Thoughts????Thx,SteveLast edited by coxsm; 11-06-2011 at 05:21 PM.Reason: meant "No, there is NOT paint on the stinger end of the rod."
Reply:Im sure ive seen some cheapo 6013's with a pink flux.Edit: A quick scan of my welding consumables book shows a 6013 with a pink flux although it listed as a red colour.Last edited by LarryO; 11-06-2011 at 05:48 PM.
Reply:Fleetweld 85 or Fleetweld 85P ?????If that is what they are.... way back when I was breaking out 85 and 85P was the rod of choice by some old timers I used to weld with.  They were used (downhill) on up to X52 pipe I think, on many pipelines back then.  I haven't burned one for many years now.  Last time was probably in the late 80's.Good luck man
Reply:My best guess is it still is a silver solder rod.Silver solder is not brazing. It melts at a lower temp. As said on that site that I referenced before you would use an OA torch usually. IIRC we used them with a paste flux too and the job was on a ship's foam firefighting system with socket weld type connections. I did not do any of the physical work. Been a long time. Don't remember the piping metal type but probably not a cheap rod. They were sort of special, was a controlled item. You could just try a torch and see what temp it melts at.Looks exactly like that pics to me and what I remember.Do a wee bit of experimenting, I would start seeing about temp it melts at.That stainless rod site said it also had a green dot or green tip. I can't see that in your pix.
Reply:Pre coated rods are coated end to end.  All the ones ive seen anyway. That rod has a bare end like a MMA electrode.
Reply:Put it in your stinger and try it on all three settings, positive, negative and a/c.  the one that gives you the best weld is the winner!!  Bob
Reply:like rhunt said..burn a few..
Reply:+3 to the last two posts, I looked at some old 316L-16 that was more white than pink and the tip end was gold.I've attached a pic with what I thought may be another suspect mentioned by Don, along with two other "snake oil" rod types. The 3/32" Super MissileWeld in the middle is kinda close on the pink.Post up a bead, and good luck,Matt Attached Images

Reply:Thanks for all your responses.Well, finally had a chance to try it out on my stinger (AC only). In addition, at an auction I also picked up some grey electrodes that had yellow  and blue on the bare end.  Figured I would try them both.Remember, I'm very much a beginner. The pink electrodes were a real, real pain.  Took me forever to strike and start welding.  And once I started welding I could not keep it going.  Arc length had to be perfect.  So much so I do not think they are intended for AC (but yes, it could just be my inexperience.)  I tried various amperage from 90 - 140.The grey electrodes were much better.  A couple strikes and I was laying down a nice bead (by my standards). Is the above good enough info to venture what they are?Thx,Steve

Reply:Maybe some old Lincoln 6010 that sat in the sun too long?It makes sense that it might give you fits trying to weld with AC, if so.
