I think I may have gotten the wrong torch for my Maxstar 152 / Snap Start II.  I got this torch off of ebay:and I'm here is the configuration for snap start:I'm worried that this torch is for gas through only and that I won't be able to hook up the power adapter that came with the torch to the snap start.  My original thought was that I just run welding cable side by side with the gas line and hook it up to the torch with a lug but now I'm second guessing myself?  Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Here is where the gas line connects to the torch:And this is info about the torch:150 Amp Air-Cooled Rubber Hoses (not cheap vinyl) Medium production work 1 piece cable w/ cover and power adapters Complete Ready-To-WeldLong back cap, 3 collet sizes, collet body & nozzleAccomodates tunsten electrodes from .020" to 1/8".
Reply:the stick  stinger connects to the brass fitting on the other(nontorch) end..the hose has the conductor internal to it..dont know nuthjn  bout thesnap start thingy..good luck..
Reply:You would just hook the stinger to the power block. Here's Tozzi's thread on his rig.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=38106His power block is a bit different, but it does the same thing yours does. I circled the power block in your picts where you attach the stinger to make the power connection. The fitting you show at the torch is carrying both gas and power at that point. . I assume your leads have Dinse connectors and will fit on the Snap Start. If not, you can change out the power block to a Dinse connector with a gas port and skip the stinger. One bigger issue is that I don't see a gas valve on the torch handle from you picts. That would mean you would have to add a valve between the power block and the cylinder to turn on and off the gas, turn the gas on and off at the cylinder (PITA), or get a new torch head ( most convienient, but also probably the most pricy).Looks like a dinse connector would run you roughly $42 or so from Arczone. I'm not sure the Dinse size on the Snap start.http://www.arc-zone.com/index.php?ma..._907_1399_1966This should be the torch body with gas valve if thats a 17 series torch like I believe from your picts. They also sell the 17 series flex head body with the valve also if you want to go that route. You might check if the have just the gas valve torch body for the CK 150 series torches. I couldn't find them with a quick look, but they are the same as the WP 17V torch bodies and usually are less expensive.http://www.arc-zone.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=296 Attached Images. No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The manual on the snap starts shows gas-in and gas-out connections.  The wiring diagram shows adjustments for pre-flow and post-flow.  And the parts breakout list has a "valve, 24vac, 2 way...."So it looks like the unit has a build in solenoid and you won't need a valve on your torch.I'd buy a dinse connector that has the 'dongle' gas lead on it.  Something like....On the dinse connector, the manual says "Receptacle, twlk insul fem (Dinse type) 50/70 series".  I've seen dinse connectors that have roughly a 1/2" diameter.  I assume that's what the 50 means.  Somebody else might chime in.Everything you need to know is in the manual.  RTFM.Edit: Also be aware there are different sized ends for different power ratings on the torch.  My 200amp air cooled torch has a larger fitting than the 150amp one.  Be careful to get the one that matches your torch if you're ordering the parts.Last edited by AndyA; 11-14-2011 at 12:12 PM.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Unfortunately I already ordered dinse connectors without the gas through.  I'm thinking about just wiring about 4" of #2 to the dinse connector and on the other end just have a thick lug.  Then bolting the lug to the power block.  I don't see why this wouldn't work the same as just attaching the power block to a power source with the proper studs.Or like DSW said, I could just go with a stinger to make the connection and then I'd be setup for quick switching between the processes.Last edited by skinner89; 11-14-2011 at 01:25 PM.
Reply:I think that's correct.  You don't want a "gas through" connector.  A "gas through" dinse will have a hole in the center and the gas will pass though the inside of the tip.I think you want the solid tip with the external gas hose. You could have screwed up and ordered a dinse for stick welding that's a solid tip with no gas connection at all.You won't get much quicker connects than with the dinse.  Untwist the dinse on the tig torch.  Lay it off to the side and leave the gas hose connected.  Then plug in the dinse for your stick lead.  You may want to plug the stick lead directly into your machine rather than go through the HF box.Last edited by AndyA; 11-14-2011 at 01:59 PM.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:This is the connector you need put your torch adapter on there with a nut and washer then  make up a short gas hose from snap start to adapter and you are welding.http://www.arc-zone.com/index.php?ma...oducts_id=2895V
Reply:You can also did what I did.  Solder a lug on one end of a piece of cable.  Put a quick connector on the other end.  Use a short nut and bolt w washers to connect to the adapter.   Cover entire connection w pipe insulation and wrap w electic tape.  Make the cable length equal to the gas line length. BTW, I have the exact same torch w very low hrs on it, a flex head and a VALVE.  I don't need the valve and find it cumbersome.  If you interested in a swap of the torch and cable only, send me a PM.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I think we need to see a picture of the 'machine end' of your torch lead.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I used that same configuration and welder for 10 years,no problems real easy just that the local welding supply house won't have any talent on the counter to help you.Read post # 7V
Reply:Thank you vinnie. I went ahead and ordered the part yesterday.. Solder a lug on one end of a piece of cable. Put a quick connector on the other end. Use a short nut and bolt w washers to connect to the adapter.
Reply:Got it working tonight using Drf255's method.  I'll switch over to the dinse adapter Vinnie linked when it comes in.  Below are my first tries.  Tried to remember tips from an instructional video I watched.60 amps5 sec pre/post flow @ 8 L/m1/16th filler rod
Reply:You need to regrind your tungsten and clean it up. You can tell which beads you ran before you dipped, by how clean they are. After you contaminated the tungsten you get that dirty haze along the beads..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
