This is one of four mounts directly under the portion of the flatbed where the gooseneck hitch is.It's designed so that the bolt will not carry the hitch weight, and will only serve to counteract fore and aft shear forces while pulling. In addition, I discovered that the bed is 1/2" wider than the truck frameAlso, the truck frame has a hump over the rear end.  The newer Ford 1 tons don't.Shims were welded to the vertical plate to match truck/bed widthDrilled to accept 3/4 boltVertical plate is then bolted to the frame, the pad is clamped to the frame (allowing for a perfect match on irregualr surfaces, then it's tacked upWhere fillets werent' practical, the joint was gouged with a grinder, and filled Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:All finish welding was done off the truck, and as usual there was some distortion caused by the processThe distortion was analyzed, the part clamped in fixture, and backbeaded 1/2 the width of the plate at one time,   The fixture was then moved over the ground down back bead, and the rest was backbeaded. Reply:The mounts will be bolted to the truck frame, the bed lowered onto the frame, and welded to the mounts.  This will insure a PERFECT fitOnly the vertical plate will be welded to the outside of the bed rails.  The gussets on the mount are just shy of meeting the bottom side of the rails and won't be welded to the bed. Reply:Samm, I have been kind of following your truck project. Kinda will be self explanatory real soon. I have one big beef with it.  Why oh Why pray tell do you always start a new thread every time you do a progress report. It's kinda hard to jump from thread to thread to see the pics and progress. just my very humble opinion and question. BTW, those are some awesome implements you fabbed up there. Which leads me to this. With my decades of experience and the authority invested in me by no one in particular. I now bestow upon you good farmersamm, the most honorable title of WELDGENEER! Reply:You know, I'm really doing a slow burn over this, DSW......   that comment you made about all of us "chipping in", to get Samm out here.   Why, would you ever think, that us chipping in, was necessary, for Samm to get to Oregon????   You have the typical liberal mindset, that everybody needs "help"????    You get your thinking warped, because Samm is a "disadvantaged minority"??????    Ever occur to you, Samm is a man, his own man, and has the ability and will to pay his own way?????    Have you ever seen, in any post of Samm's, any hint of taking anything from anything?????   This was very simple, he heard of the meeting, wanted to come, he asked, "how do I get there????"   Tell me, I'll be there."   Your comment, yesterday, about "everybody chipping in" to get Samm out here, was extremely insulting, on several different levels.    Somehow, dispite your sig line, you seem to think anybody who isn't a white, normal, middle class, non-handicapped, American, needs "help" to get anywhere in life.   WTF?????   Straighten your brain out.  Correct your sig line, you have no business quoting Mr. Reagan.   Realize, this is the interweb, you have no idea who you are talking to.   I myself, graduated from public high school, top five of my class.    Graduated, in the correct four years, from a public California university, and not in a "basket weaving" degree, either.   Couple jobs,,,  then struck out on my own.   NO special "help", no extra government money whatsoever, anywhere along the line.    No money from my dad, no money from "Cal grants".   No student loans, either, got my own job, paid the whole way.No problem, right?????   Except,,,,,   as WyoRoy would say,,,,   "Jojo is deaf as a post".I would've been insulted, if you or anybody else suggested, I needed special "help".

I have apologized to all involved both publicly and by PM. I have had no one else who seems to have had an issue with this. Here's my thoughts on the matter of helping Samm. I know quite a few guys that are hard up on money the way things are today. If I had been offered the chance to come, I would have declined because of financial reasons. A trip like that just to learn would not have been in my budget. While very useful and informative, it doesn't make me any money, and while I am getting by ok with my business, many customers have cut back on work they need done because they are feeling the financial pinch. Obviously you are not looking at this the same way. I saw it as a bunch of friends helping out another, not as charity. I have said I was wrong in what I posted. I obviously looked at a post and reached the wrong conclusion. Oops, here I was thinking "boy thats really nice of those guys to help a friend out". Instead you want to tell the world how little you all helped. A buddy of mine called me on Monday. His car blew the water pump on the way to work. He's out of work from his FT job and needs the car to get to the fill in work he can get, as well as do errands and such to take care of his small kids. He didn't ask for charity, he wanted to know if I might know how to do it and tell him how. I gave him a hand trying to fix the car Monday afternoon, and when we were unable to get it done, I attempted to use some of my resources here to help (Thanks Fabtec BTW for your assistance). I changed my schedule to help him get home and then take his car to my mechanic on my trailer Wednesday. To me thats what friends do for friends. Is what I suggested all that different? How would you treat a friend in a similar situation? You'll note I never said Farmersamm was "special". I never said he needed "help". He has not commented on any of this to me. If he feels this way then I apologize for it to him here publicly. I have already done so privately. To me, your attitude is like many who decide that they need to be insulted because of an imagined slight to someone else, because of their race or disability. " Well, he won't hire her because she's a woman!" Well why would I hire a typist that cant type, woman or not? Her gender has nothing to do if shes not qualified. "You're discriminating against the handicapped because you didn't put a wheel chair ramp in your office!" No one I know currently is in a wheelchair with one exception, and we can get him into 90% of my split level home in his chair. If he needs the bedroom, he's going to need to be carried into bed anyways, and even at that I have 2 rooms downstairs he could use. My office is in my house, and I don't have clients over, I go to them.As far as what I do for work, I am self employed. Yes for some things, such as commercial diving, I am considered an employee as opposed to a subcontractor. What difference does it make? That has to do with their insurance. I sub for a number of guys. Some just need a hand now and then and they help me if I need the extra manpower. With all the BS government puts on business, I can't afford to hire staff, instead I hire subs like everyone else. Sucks, I have a truck I'd love to run with the spare plow, but the workers comp, Social Security, and so on for an "employee" would kill all the money made with both trucks. Neither of us would get paid. Look around in construction and you'll find this everywhere. Some guys I work for, I have known for years, and it's more of a thing I do for them out of friendship. I have never been on welfare, only once for a very brief time on unemployment after the company I was working for dropped me because I attempted to raise safety issues after an accident that sent me to the burn ward for a week. I had been working for another company FT before the accident. I was injured in my PT job, and they moved me to FT to cover their a$$. They dropped me as soon as they could. I had lost the other job because I was unable to work with the injury and they had to find a replacement. I could have probably sued them, but thats not my way. I dealt with it and moved on. I had no choice in January, but take it for a short time. I took less than a month to find a job. If I get hurt at work its on me. If there's no work, I survive on what I have saved. Done it for years. I do what needs to be done to pay the bills. I have no problem getting dirty and doing work.I have no idea what you meant when you said this  Originally Posted by mark8310No problem, right?????   Except,,,,,   as WyoRoy would say,,,,   "Jojo is deaf as a post".

Reply:You didn't read accurately enough.   The guy financially unable to attend, happened back in Feb of 2008, well over a year ago, well before we even heard of Samm.   Not Samm, somebody else.   We all felt beholden to that particular man, because HIS site, was the fore runner to the "pit".    NOT charity in this case, more like "thanks".Edit:  I just re-read your post, I see now you realize why you had certain misconceptions.Last edited by mark8310; 08-21-2009 at 12:42 PM.
Reply:Getting back on topic, Samm's original post.   Samm, the way you did it, was good.   Not only are you holding the weight up, with steel, not bolts, but you are also gusseting the mounts, which would help with any side-load.   I'm sure, many times, you are pulling things, not quite a straight pull. When I mount a bed, normally I just bolt the mount plates onto the truck rails, set the bed down between the plates, block it up with whatever,,,,,   then cut small pieces of 2"x2"x1/4" square tube to fit, weld a little piece of 1/4 flat on one end, set them in convenient spots, weld the tube to the bed frame, with the welded flatbar end riding on the truck frame.   Fast and easy spacers, hold the weight.   Then weld the mounting plates to the bed rails.  Just a little different approach, but your way looks stronger, for the uses you intend to put that bed to.
Reply:DSW, an edit to my post before the last one ....BUT,,,   YOU have no right to be ticked off, YOU were the one, who mis-interpreted several different posts, from me.  Regarding two different events.  Yes, kudo's to Alex for stepping up, as a friend, this year.   Kudo's to Mud Spaz, for hosting, both events, last year and this year.   Alex attempted to help the guy last year, but it would've meant a 200 mile drive, to get to the right airport, so several of us just chipped in with cash.   Problem?????????????
Reply:Ticked off is probably a bit strong. Irritated is probably better. This is more is about the tone I read than anything in the post where you called me a liberal. As I said I never meant to imply anything negative about Samm in any way. All I was trying to do was congratulate all of you guys in the Pit and I got jumped on publicly. I go out of my way to try and make your group look good, and you attack me. I do find being called a liberal probably as offensive as you would if the tables were reversed.I don't think I ever had a misconception about what you all did. I think that all along we have been talking about the same thing at the start. You feel what you did was good, and I have always agreed and thought so for the same reasons you did. You read more into what I typed than was intended. At no time was it ever intended to be about putting Samm down, or inferring anything.Like I said in the 1st Pm to you, this part of the issue was all about misreading and misunderstanding. I misread your post. Often I read these late and just sort of breeze thru them. I remembered the intent of your members, but got the details a bit mixed. Your intension was to have a bunch of guys get together and learn, and as friends do, you all helped each other in any way you could. You read my 2nd post and misinterpreted my intent. You got irked because you felt I was putting Samm down. Wasn't happening, but I can understand why you might read it that way from the way my 1st post read.I think we are good now. I don't read the hostility from you I did before. I hope you can understand WHY I thought the way I did, and now understand that I was just trying to compliment all of the members of the Pit that had anything to do with that weekend. No attitude was intended other than to be apologetic about that 1st post, and put forward what I felt was a nice thing to do. I'll in turn pay a bit closer attention to the posts from guys that I know of that are in the Pit. I hope that you in turn will reevaluate the way you look at my posts in the future and try and not read every post as a personal attack. If I have an issue with what you post, I won't make snide comments or inferences. I'll tell you straight up. No sarcasm was ever intended in any of the posts including this one. Have a good day..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:HEY, SCREW ALL THIS CRAP!!Been some harsh words, all sides had their say, and let's get back to WELDING.  Had a member bring up the issue of stess risers.  Not something I'm terribly familiar with.  Well, a passing familiarityIt's something that should be discussed, but probably won't be, seein' how things are goin'.The mount will be welded to the side bed rail (the actual "frame" of the bed).  It will be done with vertical welds on both sides of the upper end of the mount.  See previous pics.  Welds wil go up both sides of the mount where it butts up to the bed (the bed is represented by the piece of long channel temporarily placed on top of the truck frame)The welds will be at a 90 degree angle to the long length of the bed.  TransverseI have no alternative other than welding the thing together this way.  The bed was welded to the frame for maybe since this thing rolled outta the dealers lot, and still hasn't fallen off.Transverse welds on a tempered truck frame are one thing.  Not terribly good from what I gather...............What I'm wondering, is whether mild A-36 steel has the same propensity to crack in the HAZ as high carbon heat treated steel.  Mild steel is very forgiving, and classified as an easy to weld steel. And is there a "true" HAZ with mild steel.  Dunno.The actual weld is very brittle, not very ductile.  Adjacent material would maybe be forced to flex more than usual to compensate for the brittle high tensile weld.  Or maybe not.  A terminus is a terminus no matter how you classify it.  It is a joint.  There is always an end to the continuous unwelded material.  It's reality, ya knowBut let's face it.  It's all about joints.  Stuff has to be welded, or bolted to form a useful structure. Are we dealing with an unavoidable problem because of the nature of the animal, or can it be eliminated.  Or at least abated?I fully expect a lot of people to weigh in on this.  Including Joe and DSW.  This should be about finding problems, identifying them, and solving them. We're getting into hard nuts practical welding here.  Not bench welding.  Strength is the issue, not millimeters, or appearance.Personally, I tend to overthink things.  I try to visualize the actual steel below the weld.Check your god...  egos at the door, and let's get after it.The average observer will be able to seperate the wheat from the chaff."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Y'all that are pizzin' in each other's potato chips...........now's the chance to prove your mettle"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Ok Samm let me see if I understand the question. You want to know if there is a way to weld on high tensile steel frames, and what some of the issues might be.This is one area I have been trying to get more info on this past year. I have a friend who does crane repairs and we have discussed a bit the welding and procedures required to weld HT steel. Much of the steel he welds exceeds 140ksi. I tried to go see him at his shop yesterday since I was in his area, but the guy's said he's out of town on a repair job again and will be back next week. This is what I have gathered so far from him...On average, most people should avoid welding on HT steel frames. It is very easy to alter the metal in such a way so as to destroy the properties that have been designed into the frame. That said it is not impossible to weld, only that the material requires special procedures. conforming to these procedures is key to avoiding cracking issues that are common in these steels if improperly welded. I know preheat and post heat times and temps are critical and are based on the weld procedures for the particular material. Hydrogen embrittlement is one concern. You need to use a low hydrogen rod like 7018 / 8018 and match the rod to the base material of the frame. In some cases that can require rods that exceed 110XX. You need to keep your interpass temps down below a certain level. You want to avoid taking the temper out of the steel if it has been heat treated among other things. One other thing that you want to avoid is a change in the grain structure of the metal. This is one of those areas where I get real fuzzy. We didn't get to discuss this all that much, and much of the discussion went over my head at the time because I lacked the necessary basis to understand parts of the discussion at the time. It's one of those areas that I'm hoping to learn more about talking and working with him.Now the $64,000 question, just where do you get the manufacturers WP's for the truck so you can do it properly? Other than to say Ford, I have no idea. I know Ford used to have a body builders manual which covered all the material components and options. I believe it also called out the specs on frame alterations for shortening / stretching frames. I've seen and held the one for the 2000 model year, and it covered almost everything you can imagine. I attempted to get a copy of that book last year prior to purchasing my new truck, and got the typical run around from Ford.My guess is that since your truck is a 94 it probably has a HT frame. That said, I am sure the WP is nowhere near as complex as that for my 08. There's been alot of changes over the years in this area.Until I would have a chance to talk with my friend I can only guess at the proper way for this. My guess is that you need to preheat the frame to at least 300deg and then weld with new well stored 7018/8018. I know you need to keep the temps between passes down, but don't have a number for that or the post heat time or temp.If I have time on Tuesday I hope to get to swing by his shop and see if he's in. If so I'll try and see what his thoughts are in this matter. I hope this is what you were looking for, even if the short condensed answer to the above is "I am not 100% sure.".No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:NO no no nothe welds are to be on the 3" channel above the mount.  The mount bolts to the tempered truck frame.  No welds involved on the truck itself, only the flatbed. Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:See last set of originally posted pics. The piece of channel resting on the truck frame is identical to the lower part of the flatbed body that was on the truck.  The welds will be on the channel, not the truck frame"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
