Request: Mig Alum Pics

Any body got any Mig Aluminum pics you can share?  Maybe some with a spool gun and some without?  Also would you mind sharing what machine/wire/tip and gas you used? Thanks.

Reply:It is desirable, and done quite often. I just don't have any pics floating around. It's not as pretty as tig, but if you have a pulsed mig, it can get pretty good looking. I have a Miller 175, no pulse, with a miller spoolmate gun. I run .035 wire, 5356 grade. It is stiffer, and has a little higher tensile strength. Straight argon for the gas.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:I didnt post earlier because its not much help. It was a spool gun but I dont recall any of the settings. No pulse, and no trigger jerk off welding...... Attached Images
Reply:What would the secret be to getting the short circuit mode to work properly on aluminum? Spray is ok but a bit tricky for me with a spoolgun. Would be nice to make those little dimes like you see on aluminum dump bodies......could also be pulsed I guess too. Dave
Reply:Dave, it's all a practice thing. And, a CLEAN thing. Clean it with acetone, and right before you weld it, brush it a bit on the seams. Also, for better starts, use a Mapp torch to get the seam heated up a bit so you will start with a strong arc and good penetration. Maybe 30 seconds of preheat on the first few inches of seam to be welded. You'll get a great bead almost instantly, no hump to deal with, or lousy puddle on the start up. And as for getting a good pattern to the bead, it's just like steel. Use a 'C' motion, just a bit faster.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
