We had a bike rack I threw together a while ago as a temp bike rack. It blew chunks and my daughter hated using it. I finally got around today to building a new one. I have to say it is a hit with the family. My wife said she wanted a "heavy" bike rack (the last one was a light weight). I figured I could do heavy--or at least heavy enough. Attached Images
Reply:Thats sweet man, I could def use something like that in the garage. My mountain bike almost fell over the other day onto my HD.
Reply:I swear I add replies at weldingweb.com sometimes, and they disappear (watch it show up later and then I have a double post). Anyway, looking back I could have modified the rack a little. I added the boxed yellow angle iron (see pic) to help hold the tires up firm against the rack. I could have ditched the red part. I made the yellow box mod right at the end. I guess that is how welding goes for me sometimes... just have to fly by the seat of my pants and see where I land. Kind of fun that way. Attached Images

Reply:Cool rack! I have to make one of my own here soon, maybe I'll "borrow" some of your ideas. Nice work man.Have a Jeep Cherokee? Click Here!
Reply:Nice idea! What dimensions did you use between the uprights?BuckStrictly a hobbiestLincoln AC225Millermatic 130Everlast 200LX...mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent... Adam Smith, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, p. 170.
Reply:I will have to measure it up when i get home. I just measured my bicycle tires and added 1/2 ". Doing it again I would have only added 3/8 ". Just guessing I think they are 3" apart, but I will double-check. From set to set, I can't remember the distance. I will check that too.
Reply:In the image you will see 3 measurements. If I had to do it over again, I would drop the 2.5" to 2 and 1/4 or 2 or 3/8 (just to make it tighter). If I had the room, I would have bumped the space in between the sets from about 6.5" to 8". The other I would leave alone (the 3.25" measurement)Hope it helps (sorry the text in the image is blurry... the upload and resizing did that I think, but it isn't hard to tell which measurements I am referring to) Attached Images
Reply:Thanks for the info. I think I'll whip one of these up for my garage. The kids (and wife's) bikes are scattered everywhere and take up WAY too much room.BuckStrictly a hobbiestLincoln AC225Millermatic 130Everlast 200LX...mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent... Reply:Where on earth did you buy that empty garage corner? I have owned garages for years and never owned a corner that clean. Guess I should shop on ebay and try to buy one-although I don't know where I would put it.Nice rack though-I could always store one like that oputside I guess.
Reply:live and learnive learned that one of the neat things about metal fabrication is unlike wood when you frick it up i aint ruined(sometimes) this can all be c ut apart and put back together just the way you want it.ive also learned that if you dont do that every time you look at it you'll hate it. rock on .
Reply:Made a four bike rack yesterday. I am pleased. I took a couple of pics, but need to download them. I'll post one up soon.Strictly a hobbiestLincoln AC225Millermatic 130Everlast 200LX...mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent... Adam Smith, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, p. 170.

Reply:not to shabby all you need now is some more bikes, BTW can you make one for me to hold 10?

Reply:Four bikes ain't nothin'. When I lived back in California, my father used to work for the waste management company, and would bring home broken bikes that only needed a little repair to be running again. I lost count after 30 ...Nice rack, and good idea. (Knotbored is right - where in the world did you find an empty space in your garage???? I gotta get me one of those ....) |
