Hello,I'm new here. Don't have much tig welding experience, so I was reading ahandbook and the author says not to use copper coated filler wire onanything . Is this a common practice? I will be doing a lot of tig welding inthe future on my Model A hot rod project. Thanks

Reply:The author may have said not to use copper coat hanger wire - which if that's the case, the author is correct - it's made from crap, therefore it is crap. New tig wire (mild steel) is copper coated to stop oxidation and is perfectly fine to use.Fire!, Fire! Oh wait, that's my torch...Lincoln PT-225 TIGLincoln 175 MIG
Reply:Thanks very much for the replys.
Reply:I was told in school to remove the copper on the rod before welding. I never took it off gas welding. And I dont take it off tig rod either. Works fine.mm135HTP Invertig 201 With water cooler9" Southbend LatheLots of hand tools.
Reply:Powelson is dead-on.  The S6 is a good all around choice, but the S2 or S3 is more readily available, and will work for just about any mild steel job.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:S-2 was patened for two reasons: 1. Root pas in open root pipe. 2. When droping tungsten in the puddle, so it will stay on top of the deposit.  I heard a steel Mfg. say that they would reather make Bobed wire than S-3 wire for all the Mfg's, because they had to add junk in it.  S-6 is the best wire for most welding, except for the first pass on pipe.  John G.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :

Reply:pulser, happy to explain.  S2 is tripple dioxidized with Ti, Zr and Al which bring the contaminaton to the surface and eliminate porisity on the back of the root, where there is no gas.  S2 is very sluggidh and when dropping tungsten in the puddle for hardbanding, the tungsten will not fall to the bottom of the puddle, staying on the surface where it will help the wear of the material, being used, Ie:  Drill Pipe.    JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Thanks.Anymore info on how you do "hard banding".How are you adding the tungsten to the S-2 weld pool?
Reply:There is a 3"width cut 1/6" depth and a water cooled ST16 torch that ossilutesas 3/4" wide as the pipe rotates and the tungsten is droped,ln by several means in to the puddle and the S2 keeps the tungsten from falling to the bottom of the puddle.  This helps as the pipe rotates in the hole from wearing out as quick.  The tungsten feeder follows the torch as it ossilates and continually drops tungsten into the puddle.  S2 is the best wire for this application, as it is sluggish and keeps the tungsten on the top.  Send a private mesage or e-mail, since I don't want to be told I don't know what I'm talking about  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Weldgault, thanks for the explanation, I have not heard of this particular method of "hard-facing".  I assume the tungsten is a powder?Regarding the PM or e-mail, that would defeat the purpose of the public forum where we all get to learn new things.IMO, if you do know what you're talking about, then explain the logic behind your statements, and provide some science and references as backup, then we'll all know what your talking about.By the way, the word is oscillate.
Reply:All drill pipe that is drilling in  an open hole is hardbanded.  3" on the box end of the pipe, 1" from the 17degree tapper.  Some is flush with the pipe and some is raised, according to what the customer wants.  The tungsten is sized, but it is not powder, some are pellets and it keeps the pipe from wearing out so fast, when in an abrasive hole.  This is not new, at least 60 years old, they have doing this in the oil patch.  I hope this answers most of your questions, if not I will go into it futher.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
