i have to weld a stainless hex bar to a regular steel plate. im using a lincoln weldpak and innershield nr 211 mp flux core wire. i have welded stainless to mild before this way and never had a problem. just wondering if im doing something wrong? thanks
Reply:In a perfect world, you would use 309 ss filler rod. But I have welded many heim adapters to spindles on trucks and such with a fluxcore welder in the field. I did that on my own truck, and no problems with it. And, yes, I abuser the truck. The uniball adapter blew out through the retainer clip. It's been 2 years, and no cracks. I have welded lots of cleats and Drings on steel truck racks that were SS, and I just migged them with the same filler. Only thing, it can rust. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:If you're not welding to a code or procedure. Any thing will work, even gum in a dam leak. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:If you have a good stick welder I know for a fact that most mild steel rods work perfectly well to weld both together. Amtec 264 is a good general purpose stainless rod, "wonderod" I've heard them called. Pricy as hell but a no-brainer to run because it's so sweet. On a job one time we were installing some machinery at a stainless distributer and ran outta small rods. They had tons of stainless rods they just gave us. In order to get a good burn I had to turn the heat a bit higher and the last 1/3 of the rod glowed hot. I only got 2/3 out of each rod but they welded fine to my mild steel.I never did any with my mig and I just got the tig last week and don't know a dammed thing about it. If you continue to have trouble with the mig, I know for a fact you can do a nice job with a stick electrode.Hope it helps. |
