Well since I've been looking around the site, I've been making all sorts of different tools and stands to make my shop life a little easier (that and now that I am almost unemployed, I don't have money to work on any of my real projects!). I've gotten lots of different ideas from here, and I think next on the list is a tubing bender. Anyway, this is the grinder stand I just knocked out the other day. It's all 2" square tubing, with a piece of 2"x3" up the center. It works great and has made some much needed bench space. Right after this I made a stand for my chop saw, but didn't take a pic yet. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic, but you get the idea Attached Images
Reply:I wondered about those stands...  I have mine bolted to a table and would really rather move it to another place in the shop (where I do all my grinding..)  I DO however, use the BRUSH a LOT and I find that I put a LOT of 'FORWARD PRESSURE' on the front of the grinder (sometimes mine will almost come to a stop when I'm using it, I'm pressing so firmly...).Is the stand you have in the photo STURDY enough for that kind of thing ?  Are ANY of the Stands sturdy enough for that kind of usage ?Cheers,/Jman...
Reply:It is sturdy, and if for some reason I lean a little too hard on it, I simply put my foot on it. So far, so good. Now if I find that I'm not able to press as hard as I'd like, I'll simply put it up against a wall.
Reply:like the stand. you could bolt it to the foundation if you wanted to. we have some tools in the shop that are secured to the slab so you cant knock it over.I break things for a living...
Reply:Nice stand!  Heavy base. easily secured with idle foot. But --- You aren't doing any grinding or wire wheeling with that beautiful specimen of rolling stock behind it I hope!!-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Mine is made out of an old truck rim, and added concrete to the inside of it for more weight. Easy to move around, just tilt over a little and roll around like a cyclinder.G3miller... 225g, s32p, 250x, 304, 12vs, MSW41     victor o/a thermal dynamics cutmaster 50 lenco panel spotter        hobart hf-boxG3 Farms.....raising cattle, hay, kids and hell, ...oh yeah I'm a fire sprinkler contractor by trade.
Reply:My grinder and vice are each mounted to old 18 wheeler brake drums.  They are a little heavy but add a good bit of stabilty when applying pressure on either but still being able to tilt them and roll around to different location.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:You could put a small "paddle" out front to put your foot on if you are needing to push HARD on it.  I like the simplicity of your design.  My propane cylinder design was the result of not wanting to buy any stock, not having any on hand, and wanting to use the leftovers.  It looks like your stand will provide you with years of service, and you can always cut it up and re-use the stock if you want.Hobart 125Words mean things

Reply:I made the same stand. Problem I have is the thing dances all over the floor. I do have a lot of vibration coming from the grinder, which may be the problem, but I can't hold the thing still long enough to do any grinding. Any suggestions ?

Reply:. o O (Damn, this guy's got all sorts of toys in his garage ... PICTURES OF THE CARS!!!!!!)I like the simple fabrication o fthe stand, although maybe the base should have been just a little larger.  The truck rim idea is great for a stand, being able to roll it wherever you need it.

Reply:Originally Posted by independentcustomsThanks everyone. No, no grinding is going on around the Chevy, at least not til I start repairing the floors! I made the stand out of surplus metal from work, I have to remember to grab the rest of it that I have laying around, for future projects. I would have liked to make the base of of something like an 18 wheeler drum, but I didn't have any at my disposal.
