Hi,I'm an hobby welder (or should I say I own a welder that I'm using as an hobby) and sometime I fix snow removing equipment I have.I have a few questions:1. I have gray and red coating 6013 electrodes. Is there any difference?2. for brazing, if there is light rust on the metal, does it have to be cleaned or does the heat does the job?3. when cutting with oxy/acetylen 1/4" steel or less with 00 tip, the cut is pretty clean when I do it but as I move the cut is filled with metal in fusion. I don't think this is normal, what can cause this?4. I had 2 weld break on snow removing equipment in the last month. I think these are mig welds. If they were done by me with a 110 volt mig, I would understand, but since they came from the shop, with proper equipment, it is more disappointing. There seem to have little penetration with zero beveling done. Is it a procedure problem (lack of beveling, wrong amperage) or simply a lack of training?ThanksFrancois

Reply:I use 5-6 lbs for acetylene and 30-40 for oxygen. I frequently clean the tip with the small rounds files. Maybe I have to be more careful about the angle and the direction I cut.

Reply:Sandy I use 00 tips most of the time and I always run 10 psi and 40 psi. I always get good cuts. Francois like was said I agree speed and angle. I run as fast as I can and still cut. Sometimes it partialy melts back so I use a mallet or cresent wrench to break it free. If you get a big open cut you will have a crappy cut and a lot of heat into the part wich can warp thinner metal. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:I too use 10 on acetylene and 40 on oxygen regardless of tip size, cutting or welding. Now I have been known to use 125lbs oxy with a 3 or 4 for cutting 2 to 4 inch plate. On 1/4 you should be able to crank that double aught wide open and not melt it back together if you have the proper travel speed and a properly cleaned tip. If you can't hear a ripping sound that sounds like it is coming from a foot or so off the tip it isn't right. On 1/4 I keep the torch perpendicular to the plate, same for 3/16, and the lighter stuff I point the torch ahead of the cut and rip it. Since you are learning you might try turning your heat down so you can go slower without it melting back together. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship.
