Hi Group,My first post here, looks like a lot of good info on this forum.I'm looking to buy my first Mig Welder and looking pretty hard at the 175HD.Just need it for some basic welding around the shop on misc projects. Currently I own the Lincoln Electric AC/DC 225/125 Welder, which I love, just in the market for a nice Mig.Does anyone have any experience with this Unit? Thanks
Reply:Hi and welcome Welderman. I have a Lincoln 175hd (1 of 3 welders). To be honest I did not like it much at first. I had only run stick. It took me a while to dial it in and I am still learning. Once I got a bottle and started running Mig, as opposed to flux-core, I am very pleased with the results. It has limitations but within its capabilities it works well for me. It is the only mig I've used so there are many on this site more qualified to give you a comparative view. A plus is the price has dropped and you can pick up a new one for under $475. Good luck!

Reply:if at all possible see if you can spring for a Lincoln or other machine with a variable power control rather than a tapped machine. They no longer build my SP 175+. Lincoln has replaced it with the 180. You will find that the variable power machines are more flexible in general usage when small corrections in power are needed. You are well-advised to look for a 220 VAC machine in any case.My 2 cents.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:After some added research since I posted this ad, I came across the Miller Matic 180. Found for a decent price of the internet, so might look at that one instead.Anyone have much to say about the MM 180?Thanks
Reply:What he said, make sure it has continuous voltage control and not tapped. The Lincoln ProMig 180c goes for under $700. I don't know about the Miller as I only have the Lincolns. If it is as good as the big millers it should be good. The Lincoln has the best drive unit I have seen on these things. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:We have the Millermatic 175 and my neighbor has the Millermatic 180.  I have welded with both.  They are both great little machines with a nice arc for short circuit.  They both have variable voltage, no taps.  We're very happy with this 175.  I used to take it out on the truck before I got the Passport mig.  I also have the 'big' Miller, the 350P.  The little 175 holds it's own quite well, within it's capabilities.  I recommend to use the small Millermatic with .030 wire and argon/co2 mix gas with a low co2 content, like 15% for best results.Last edited by DesertRider33; 01-25-2008 at 12:52 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
