Hey guys, Hope everyone is having a good holiday! So i picked up a millermatic 35 this past weekend, the seller just gave me a good deal, very honest guy and it came with a huge tank (but he doens't know whats in it), extension cord, gloves, helmet. Anyhow I was planning on just pluging it in the 220 volt where my dryer is but noticed that my plug Male/female are different. Can someone school me, please? Is there a converter/adapter i can buy?Woops sorry for the big picturesMany thanksOman Attached Images
Reply:Not sure but if memory serves me right that plug is a 30 amp for a dryer, Yes it is 220 V but you have to take into account the wiring in the home has been sized for a dryer. You should have probably 50 amp service equipment for a MM 35. You could probably adapt the plug to fit the dryer receptacle but unless you are running on the low setting you will likely trip the breaker often or worse overheat the wiring and that start to make problems. Others will chime in, but I think you will need a heavier serviced outlet, best thing to do is look at the tag on the machine and pull up the owners manual from the miller website with the model and serial of the machine, it will tell you how many amps the machine will pull and you will have the info you need."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:thank you kolot.  I will check to see  what amp I definetly need.  I just checked my fuse box and I noticed my range in my kitchen has a 50amp dedicated to it.  I will probably use that one just to make sure the welder is in working order.
Reply:The second plug(grey) is a 50 amp range plug.  I have this on all my machines.  The standard welder style plug and receptacle are very hard to find in the non-welding world.  When I first got my setups, I could not find them anywhere, but the range plugs were readily available.  A few of the welders I've purchased we're also changed over to the range plug by he prior owner.  If you don't want to cut the plug off your machine,  make an extension cord with the appropriate sized wire and get the female welder plug for one end.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Thanks Drf255 for the tips. the welder came with a extension so i cut that end off and went to Home depot to get a 50 am range plug.  My next question guys is that this welder MM35 is calling for 40 to 35 amp breaker fuse.  Will it be alright to run it on my dryer recepticle where it has a 30 amp breaker fuse, in the fuse box  (hopefully this makes sense)
Reply:Yes you can run that machine on the 30 amp dryer outlet. The breaker protects the wires in the wall, not the item itself. Using an smaller breaker simply means that you may trip the breaker if you run at the upper end of that machines output. If it happens once or twice it won't hurt anything, that's the point of the breaker. If you are repeatedly tripping the breaker, either the breaker is old and needs to be replaced, or you are simply asking too much of that line, and need to find an outlet with a higher breaker. Never simply replace the breaker with a larger one. That will make the weak point in the system the wires in the walls. Instead of tripping the breaker, the wires can heat up, melt and short, possibly starting a fire, out since you defeated the safety device designed to prevent that from happening. It's not a bad idea to make a note of the settings you are using when you trip the breaker. After a few times you will begin to get  a feel how high you can go and not have issues. As long as you stay below that point you won't have any issues. My guess is that chances are you will be able to get 75-80% of the output out of that machine on a 30 amp outlet from the specs you posted. Should be enough for most projects..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:DSW thank you so much.  Being a novice with welding and elct, you have helped me a bunch.  Is it hard changing the 30amp breaker fuse to a 50amp?  all i need to do is swap the fuse?  But if i do switch it will it harm my dryer when the wife does the clothes?
