I have a leak in my cat pipe. I think I can patch the leak by welding up the hole. I believe it a stainless pipe. I have stainless sticks . What else could  I use ? Would a oxy fuel work ? what rod ? Has anybody reapaired these units ? No I can't use a test pipe because we have e-check in effect.

Reply:The pipe is most likely 400 series stainless, but there would be no problem welding it with stainless, even if it was was plain carbon steel.  Oxyacelylene welding would require the use of a flux like Solar B . . . my first choice when working on a vehicle as there's no chance of damaging the electronics.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:My 1997 and 2000 welded fine (gutted both cats and rewelded) using carbon MIG wire (it was all I had at the time) and are working flawlessly several years later. Vehicles are remarkably uncaring about being welded. Disconnect the battery though.
