Made a "new" rear trailer hitch for a dumptruck owned by a Voc. Tech. School..Few pics of B-4...During..And After..This was fun!Started out like this..Trial fitting..Couple of welds..Next!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Last..I welded the assy to the chassis with 1/8" 7018...The Boss lifted the truck off the ground with 1 "D" ring so it's not going anywhere soon..Almost done..Still a few things to do Monday..New mudflap brackets and get the lights plugged in again..This was fun!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:My point was it seems like a phenominal waste of time to tig this up.  7018 would have been more than fine for this entire build.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Hey Zap!   Long time no see.  Good job as usual!!!
Reply:as far as the work goes it looks exceptional...my only question is why? When I went to a voke school we always did that kind of stuff in house. Do they not have a metal fab shop?
Reply:Was that done with MIG?  If so,  I would like to see some of your technique if you ever capture it on video.... or feel like drawing it up.

Reply:Had to drag it up againNot bein' a welding guru, just an ol' geezer cow dood, I gotta ask.......Why on God's Green Earth would ya be weldin' on a truck frame anyhoo?  Properly mounted bed (with bolts) would spread the shear along the entire length of the frame, and a good stiffener running from bottom of hitch up to the bed would tie it all in.Vert down is some pretty risky stuff too  7018 gots more slag than my cows got crap  I couldn't run that fast if Bert the Bull was chasin' me down.Bear in mind I'm no perfect stick dood, but I'm makin' an effort to get there.  Might not be the most beautiful welds on the planet, but they're sound welds.First pic..........the umpteenth weld on a sacrificial piece of plate.  Plate was welded in to pull a length of tubing square.  Anchored to the shoulders on the edges, and repeated welds, ground out, and repeated, to pull the tubing back into line.  Shrinkage thing.  Each succeeding weld pulls the member back a little furtherSecond pic.......A weld up an irregular stacked section of two pieces of channel.  Narrow gap at bottom, and widening gap towards the top.Third pic.......one of MANY practice uphills.  Close, but not quite thereFourth pic...... a slightly droopy horzontal weldForget the dime, ya need some more time under the hood with the stick stuff.  This ain't something that should be put up as sound work, and I don't understand why y'all didn't say something about it.  Y'all might be behind this truck when it's pullin' a backhoeYou got a pretty good following.  You shouldn't be puttin' up stuff that misleads folks.  And y'all shouldn't be slappin' him on the back for it.  It's some gruesome stuff.I never put up stuff that doesn't have a slight apology  Some of it is ok, and some of it ain't perfect.  Ya see what ya see, and that's that.I kin already feel the heat Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:EDIT---  I'm wrong about the pintle plate, found out that it is a standard method of attachment to weld to the frame.  Some municipality bid specs also required bolts in  addition, but all accepted welding. However, one in particular underlined and in bold letters specifically rejected any vertical down welding.  I suppose they had bad experience with improper welds.Sorry about the attachment issue  But I gotta stand by my guns on downhill 7018 structural stuff.  Tain't a good idea"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Well Samm...You sound just like a few someones I used to know..Give you credit though. You saw how wrong you were with the welding to a frame issue is and for that I give you I have MANY pics of welded hitches that I was going to throw at you but oh well..Lets move on..7018 is a all position rod correct? So what if I did it downhill..The pics don't lie..I would be glad to do it in front of anyone..And again if needed..It's not going anywhere soon..That I will assure you..Maybe you should practice a little more..And stay away from that PITtaful info they tell you..It's not helping.Tell the boys I said Hello...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:No matter if its Uphill, downhill, across the top of the hill, under the hill or upside the head that hitch is a bitchin piece of work.Felonps leadhead  where did you snag the picture of my mother in law??Caution lurker lives here" hmmm That is serious, pass the ganja and pick up a  24 of MGD"
Reply:Zap, me for one have Fab/installed more hitches then proably anyone on this board.Your 7018 vert down looks like !@#$.Sorry to have to tell ya but it does. Also i take it your boss didn,t bid this job because there no way anyone of my customers would pay you the time to tig all that.70-S6 .035 mig in these hands and you,d be looking aweful silly while i,m watching you tig yours up and i,mall done. And this is that,s the "PITAFUL" truth sorry.
Reply:One other thing Static load lifting the truck alot different then a moment load, lifting the truck proves nothing. Then again you can,t tig weld a Moment connection in a high rise building so you wouldn,t know about this stuff.
Reply:Samm, Personally I agree with the v-up, and would have done it that way myself. However, I will say this... I work with a guy who does all his vertical 7018 downhill. He has done a good bit of structural stuff, mostly channel, plate and some square tubing, and I can't recall any problems with any of it. One that really strikes me is a cantilevered support for a conveyor that sometimes reverses direction, and the other is a frame for an aggregate shaker/screen. This stuff has been in service for two years and if the welds were not sound they would have come apart by now. This is all mild steel, and it may be more forgiving, I dunno. I'm not a professional.  (Unless you count the times I've been paid to weld.)I guess what I'm saying is that I've seen some downhill welds that were pretty damn strong. That being said,I only run downhill when I think I'm gonna blow through on something thin.Zap, How's about showing us some uphill 7018?

Reply:Ummmm.......   zap????   There is, today, only ONE 7018 that I am aware of, code allowed to run downhill.    Look here, about page 20 or so.   http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...ature/c210.pdfJust because it's allowed, doesn't mean it's appropriate, in all cases.   This case particularly, not appropriate.   Has nothing to do with who belongs to what website, or message board, just not an appropriate application for 7018 downhill, even if using the specific 7018 approved for the process.Myself, if using any process, to install a hitch on whatever, downhill 7018 will not be any part of that process.Like Admweld, I have probably  built and installed more of these, than most of you will ever see.   I have also cut out, and replaced, more amateur installations, than most of you will ever see.   This case in particular, with an 8" Channel iron, is a amateur installation.   Least here on the west coast, anyway.  Those puny little gussets, don't do a whole lotta good.
