So I have started my new job. Its all aluminum welding. So the plant manager comes around today with a brand new Speedglass helmet with that adflow system. He says they want me to wear it because I am welding aluminum all day. I appreciate the concern, and the gesture but, Fumes from aluminum welding? News to me!Anyone know about these fumes?
Reply:All welding produces fumes. Hence the need for proper ventalation. --Gol'
Reply:Not sure about aluminum, except at one time people tried to link it to alzhiemer's.  But here is one link on other metal welding fumes.http://lungdiseases.about.com/od/adv...welding_LD.htm
Reply:I mean, I know everything should always be well ventilated, but this guy made it out worse than flux-core fumes.
Reply:the TIG process creates very little particulate fume as no metal is transfered across the arc.as with other arc welding processes, gaseous fume is created from the action of the arc- UV/IR radiation acting on the surrounding atmosphere. reflective materials and high welding currents create more gaseous fume (just as when welding Al). ozone is the major one/concern i believe but there will also be nitrogen oxides and CO/CO2ozone MSDS...  http://www.vngas.com/pdf/g242.pdfwhile ozone is helpful way up in the atmosphere it's pretty harmful when inhaled in any quantityPPE is usually the last/least desirable option as it only protects the wearer- anyone else in the area is not protected. all that is usually required to meet occupational exposure limits is local extractionlook on the bright side. you may not like wearing it, initially at least, but it's relatively rare to come across an employer that cares about anything except the bottom line
Reply:We had OSHA come in our plant, where all we do is TIG aluminum.  They tested the air, and put little metering things on a few welders.  I guess the results weren't that bad, because nobody wears any type of filtered air hood now.
Reply:It's a shame that way too many people (the VAST majority) do not know what fumes are. They are tiny METAL particals in the air& smoke. They are ONLY caused by the melting of metals ,like in welding or melting , smelting . Also there can be fumes from PLASTICS . NOTHING else . There are NO gas fumes , for example . They are gas VAPORS. THIS according to U.S.Navy & U S GOVERNMENT . It seems that T V newscasters  & even firemen will NEVER learn  or accept this fact .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fumecan you define pedantic?
Reply:Engloid, yeah doesn't suprise me, as long there is reasonable ventilation...don't know the what general environment Burnit works in though. i've been in some places (again TIG only) where the air quality was terrible. didn't hang around for long!
