Got started this afternoon on another residential gate project. This one's a real simple pipe gate. The only ornamental part will be the cursive B that will be cut from plate and centered on the middle vertical brace, and covered with white reflective tape.I still have to cap the ends, cut and mount the "B", and take care of a few other details.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Brian, I have enjoyed seeing your gate projects. Keep us posted on this one. Either it's for a tall, skinny guy or there is much more to come!Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:Tapered?  Or is it just the angle of the camera? From my perspective it looks tapered, so I'm assuming this is one half of a two part gate, possibly the top half?MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:I thought the same.   Looks good thus far!  Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:I think you guys are looking at it wrong... I believe it's the whole gate, minus the "B."  Reminds me of the joke about the pilot landing 36 on runway 09/27... he says,"Gee, the runway's not very long... but it sure is wide."Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:Thanks. This is what I'd call a "Forest service" style gate. One piece 12'-10" wide. It will get an automatic operator with keypad/intercom and a couple of one button remotes. We start installation on Thursday. Here's a the ornament. I used a blow up projector and cut it out with a Victor 150 o/a torch.I used a couple of 3/4" long pieces of 1/2" round bar to sand it off the vertical brace.Does the "B" help put in better perspective? It is tapered, 2' at the hinge side tapering up to 1' at the far end. The top pipe (3") will be level.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]

Reply:"Forest Style", I've seen them many times, but never referred to by that name.  Makes perfect sense when put that way.Very nice.  1:3 ratio for the taper makes it look right too.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Nice.  What color?  I'm guessing black, with a contrasting color for the "B"?Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster

Geesh since 1977 America in general has turned into to a bunch of Star Wars geeks like Eric Foreman. The letter was cut with a Victor model 150 torch. About as cheap as you can get for a cutting outfit. I scored this one used with regulators, bottles, and a cart for 1-fiddy. All I had to add was hoses.
Reply:I hate to admit this, but I actually saw the original Star Wars movie (yeah, Episode IV, fof you young'uns out there) at a drive-in theater when I was eight years old (do the math).  The drive-in was playing the movie on two screens, but one was about a minute behind the other.  Me and several friends hung out in the playground by the concession stand - someone had wired the place for sound, so that was cool - and we would sit on top of the big slide watching the movie.  "Hey, didja see that part?"  "Nah, missed it."  "Well, look over there - it's about to come on."  "Cool!" "Oops, wait, car chase on Screen Three .... "  Of course, when i talk about this, people look at me and say "I didn't realize you were that old!"  Well, yeah ..... doesn't mean I look or act like it, but I am ... Growing old is mandatory - growing up is optional.Okay, sorry guys, I digressed .....I do like the way the gate turned out, but it's a shame that you had to cover up that beautiful metalwork with reflective tape.  I would have preferred leaving it as bare metal, sanded with a flapwheel, and hit with several coats of clear for protection.
Reply:Well we had a great day here Friday. Myself and a helper and my step brother, who stopped by the job site on the way to pick up some tile for another job, got 3 posts(1-keypad, 2-gate post, 3 post for locking in open postition) for this gate set Friday morning. Thankfully we were able to find dirt instead of rock to set the posts in.While we were digging holes the electrician's helper got the ditches for the low voltage wire dug way quicker than anticipated. While concrete set for the afternoon we ate lunch and picked up 50' of rail for anther job.I dropped it off and lined up my helpers on that other job and head off to the tile store and bolt store for anchors and tile supplies. By the time we got back, in about 2 hrs, my helpers had all to the rail that was available stood up, tacked and ready to be anchored. All in all that put this job a full day ahead of schedule.I'm sure I'll pay for this good fortune in the near future with great agony and gnashing of teeth, but for today and this weekend I'm going to savor it.Here's the other rail job. Demo and replace ~54 linear feet of rotten wood rail with powder coated steel.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:You and your helpers do some darn fine work.  Looks great!Miller Millermatic 212... and that's about it... for now...
Reply:Well it's not the gate but here's what we got done Monday and Tuesday. There's 2 more short rails for the front stoop, too. I have to call for inspection in the am and wipe off the last little bit of residue from the grout where the tile was repaired and this puppy is done. We got the gate hung today and need to go back and weld up the operator brackets, then all that's left is the operator electrics and it's done, too. I'll get some pics of it soon.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
