How many (or do any) of you guys use the tig finger thing that Jody from tips and tricks sells? Is it any good? Is it needed? What other than gloves and watercoolers and such do you use for heat protection?Could be talking about any welding process. Ever have to get creative to shield the heat? How do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!
Reply:If that finger thing is a tig filler feeder, its a crutch.   You will learn to feed the wire in  your hand in time with out even thinking.  I have one and it sits in a box.  If you do get one,  weld aluminum with it and you will curse.  That little wheel really has to be turned to keep up.I find I can run one length of tig filler before the torch gets hot.   I buy my filler 10 lbs at a time, so I use water cooled torch.    I wear Black Stallion Mig gloves.  Tig gloves are too thin and I burn my self too much.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:David basically all it is is a tube of heat resistant cloth that you put over your finger that you slide along the material. It's adding an extra layer of heat shielding to the contact point of your glove on the steel/alum. I've seen guys basically do the same thing by using a heavy stick glove on their torch hand and cutting off the fingers that don't come in contact with the work. ( usually a reuse of gloves the fingers are F'd on already.) Some will wear a light weight glove under it, and some won't..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:The Tig finger works excellent, but will still get hot though with thin tig gloves. Also works well for Oxy cutting and Mig. Reply:Thanks you DSW,  at least now I know what we are talking about.   I don't seem to have too many problems burning my hands, I can do it just fine.  If I need heavier gloves, I wear them.  I have tig gloves that I rarely use, Mig gloves that I use the most and plain ol heavy welding gloves.  What ever fits the application.  I burn the index finger and the back side of my off hand frequently.I have never tried the finger thing. Reply:I'm less experienced than these guys, but I like the tog finger.  I wear Tillman thin TIG gloves and put he tig finger over my ring or pinky finger.  I needed to cut mine down, a bit too long for me.  I also didn't mind supporting Jodi a bit.  I learned a ton from his videos and he seems like a super guy.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:Most of the time I don't use mine, but sometimes I find that it's really useful.  Sure beats burning yourself.  Definitely a good item to have in the "bag of tricks"
Reply:I have a few & use them from time to time. I also picked up, of all things, an "ove glove:" and it works real nice with tig, usev it on thre torch hand, laying your torch hand right onto hot metal no problem...miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
Reply:Ove Glove I had to look it up but hey, it is a kevlar glove. I've used some kevlar sleeves in the past for some other applications and that stuff really works. Nice idea TurboHow do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!
Reply:Water cooled tig glove. Still under development, but should be available at you LWS fall next year. Attached Images
