Reply:After watching a friend split tons and tons of wood.  I decided that having the cutter stationary at the end is the only way to go.  It allows the split pieces and shavings to exit the end of the splitter rather than getting packed under the slide. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Good job so far, I hope to move to a place what requires me to split logs someday.
Reply:Looking good so far.The wood should not slip out with those teeth. Are you going to make it stand up also? If so that is why the back plate is stationary.Mine is an old Brave brand splitter. Being able to stand it up is really handy for the large pieces.Tim Beeker.
Reply:I use mine upright more than on the flat..just sit there with a good size pile and toss em...all the big rounds nobody messes with are too big to lift for sure...I'd use it more on the flat if I had a conveyor to feed it though must be getting old LOL.Lincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a  Hypertherm POWERMAX 30

Reply:Yes, the splitter will be vert. and horz., the endplate and wedge guide were just on there for the picture, I got a little bit done tonight, but we had a big family get togather, so I will work on it saturday after work. The teeth on the end will be getting ground down a little bit so there not so aggressive, but I do like having the teeth on there rather than nothing, or just small rod. Shes comin togather though, I picked up a used cylinder, 4" bore, 26" stroke and 2" rod, off a 2003 bobcat mini-ex today, the dealer took it off because one of the steel hyd lines was kinked and they didnt want to fix it, but there loss is my gain, was just the size I was looking for as well. Hopefully I will have it mounted tomorrow, and be able to get hoses monday, and have her spliting wood by tuesday!Miller Dynasty 300dxSpeedglas 9002XMiller Spectrum 375 XtremeLincoln PowerMig 255xtLincoln PowerMig 140cMilwuakee Portaband
Reply:Should be a nice set up. Mine is Horz. only and having the wedge at the end is the best, but totally agree that if you are going for both Horz, and Vert that your flat needs to be on the end.  I've got some work to do to mine this winter, getting a bit sloppy and needs some beads ran on the plate(its only about 30 years old and never been touched).  Trbo
Reply:Few more pictures, hoping to get cylinder mounted sunday.Got the wedge welded up 95%, cnc machined cutting edge, shes sharp as a knife and i almost dont want to use it because it looks so nice right now! Reply:Looking good. That wedge looks exactly like what is on my brave.I don't see any cylinder mounts. Are you going to extend the tubing?Tim Beeker.
Reply:Nice looking wedge, I was going to ask what you were planning on using.  Very nice looking as its new but somtimes the old weathered and used look that has split tons of wood looks even better, knowing all the work it has done.  You will enjoy using this, thanks for the pictures.Trbo
Reply:Nice job welding but I am wondering where the cylinder is going. This I hope is not a opps. Not sure but the cylinder looks a bit small around. Hope not. I am building one but it has a 4 in. cylinder. Its a might longer. Its off a D8 Cat for tilting blade. But I have an outside furnace and will take long wood so I might be able to use the extra length. Again good job. Want to see the finished project. Harold
Reply:Are you certain that the tubing will hold up?  I have seen much stronger systems bend and fail.  I am afraid the tubing is going to cave on you...I hope it doesn't, but I have seen Heavy 12 inch I beam fail under splitter loads...of course that was with seasoned Cherry and gum.Otherwise, nice set up...Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Cylinder is a 26" stroke, 4" bore, 2" rod, a lottof the storebought splitters us a 24" stroke, 1.5" rod and 4" bore, this is just the cylinder I found that wasnt to big, but was just within my paramaters of what I wanted. Only tyme will tell if the tubing will hold up, its a different design than most, but too often i see the "wings" of an I beam setup get bent up by the wedge, but we will see. Im still withholding some of the details until i can take pictures of them built.Miller Dynasty 300dxSpeedglas 9002XMiller Spectrum 375 XtremeLincoln PowerMig 255xtLincoln PowerMig 140cMilwuakee Portaband

Reply:That thing looks nice!Tim Beeker.
Reply:This looks like a very smart build. I'd love to see it in person. I recently built a simple logging arch trailer, and only presently aspire to successfully create a hydrostatic-mechanical working machine on wheels. Maybe this means little to you, but congratulations. Maybe my modest praise will help you to gain perspective and realize your amazing skills. What a consonant act of metal fabrication!

Reply:The splitter is looking good. It looks similar to a proven design (Wallenstein splitters). When using similar materials and features I found some problems. With rectangular tube (formed metal) the metal is softer than beams (mill stock) this has a tendency to cause galling of the metal between the slide and tube. I went with AR400 for the slide to stop the galling of the tube.Welding on a finished hydraulic cylinder can cause problems of distortion especially at the front. To eliminate the need for welding to hold the cylinder in place I remove the rear tang, place a 1/2" plate over the end and run (4) 5/8" high strength rods to the front mount. It is important to keep the rods close to the cylinder walls. It ends up looking like a tie-rod cylinder.
