Hey guys im a 15 year old kid and I grew up on the farm and my Grandpa told me in order to get my part of the ranch i would have to hold down a job for 3 years. well since im a rancher i already know how to make  decent welds and I was wondering what type of certifications would i need to work for the local John Deere?Quality is our policy.
Reply:The best thing would be to ask them.Leo

Reply:Odds are that any shop won't hire you till your 18 because of liability concerns, but if you want to know what a shop requires, the shop would be the best place to start asking. My name's not Jim....
Reply:I d work for the local bobcat dealer,   They require liability insurance on my part but I am independent shop.   Some shops will ONLY hire their welding out because of liability reasons.   If you work FOR them, you only need skills.  Probably not certs, but its up to the dealer.I have a 3g unlimited thickness in MIG.  I only get asked for it when working on Cell Towers which I don't do any more. You have been made a sweet offer, don't screw it up.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The liability. I'm in the same situation you are (15, looking for a job), and over here in NJ, I have to fill out a bunch of papers just for a simple job as a cashier! you'l have alot more of a chance at 16, plus more hours you can work.  It's a hard life. ):But if you attempt this road: 1. At least get certified in stick, MIG, or TIG. For shops like that stick isn't so common, but its still a valuable skill.2. Send in the resume's and hope for a break! Or try to start your own company! Like the kids that shovel snow or rake leaves. Reply:Exactly what sort of work they do in house and what sort of work the sub out as others have questioned comes into play.  I bought a laforge front hitch from a deere dealer and when It didn't fit my model like it was supposed to I found out that that amount of stock material to weld togther they had was very close to zero.  My idea of a certification involves known materials.  If I took a welding related job to the John Deere dealer I would hope that the welder would be able to tell the service manager things like maybe those are awful high alloy stuff and even with xxx amount of pre heat and post heat it is still kind of an iffy proposition.  Or like that broke because the stitches were put here and not there.  You might lower your sights to expect to be the one grinding off the paint before someone else welds the D ring to the trailer or arc gouging off the cutting edege and learning how much pre heat and what order to put the stitches in.  As far as the age thing goes you already have some of that to read.  fran

Reply:You know some of the absolute worse welds ive ever seen are from farmers and some of the best work ive seen Have been from farmers . At 15 I doubt that a big name company will hire you as said because of liability .But good luck and keep practicing you may be 1 of the farmers that will be able to weld and impress a tradesman

Reply:What kind of welding depends on the shop. My local deere dealer does things from cosmetic sheet metal to light fabrication of 1 off equipment for small specialty markets. Most if not all are mig welds. If you check with Deere they used to have a program for paid schooling with a commitment for work for a period of time. The younger you start the more likely to get in especially helpful if you or your family has a good relationship with the dealer.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:Always glad to help where I can. Also glad to see someone my age interested in welding! One more suggestion I forgot to say earlier, If John Deer doesn't accept you, try a local auto shop. If you go there, you'll likely learn a lot about gas welding (oxy/acetylene).-Alex-AlexSears/Craftsman 230A Buzzy BoxSears/Craftsman 180A Buzzy BoxChicago Electric 80A InverterALL STICK...ALL THE TIME!I spent a lot of time with the square peg and round hole.

Reply:A lot of places will only ask to interview and they will have you perform a weld test.  If you can fit and moreso in a maintenance line of work, torch cut and gouge, all the better!
Reply:i farm out here in Ca. and everyone of my neighbors have buz box stick welders and a bucket full of unused and a mix of different length stubs of 6011 sitting all nice and rusty next to the 2" dirt covered tombstone lincoln. some even have nice new not so shiny migs that haven't seen 10 minutes use time. none that i know around here have a tig machine. oh and not to forget their o/a set. well lets just say i wouldn't light it off if my life depended on it because if i did my life would probably cease to exist as it does today anyway. ask any of them if they can weld and you will most likely get "oh hell yeah" in return. i have a 17 yr old son that grew up on the farm here part time when his mom would let me get him and his younger brother and they both learned to basic weld here in all processes. the 17 yr old is in his 4th year welding in high school and has the attitude that he can weld anything with everything. pretty much the only thing his instructor teaches is "aesthetic" mig welding. from time to time he comes out and challenges me to a competition with the mig. he knows i don't try to stack dimes with the mig and i have explained why to him many times. (if you need to ask why. go to school.) so i counter with, lets do stick, o/a or even tig and he suddenly has something else to do. the point of this is as an old fart and as already said don't approach the old guy running the shop and try to impress him with your wealth of farm welding knowledge because he might just do what i would do and walk you over to the o/a rig and put a welding tip on it and hand you some rod and say let me see what you got. he would do this because he knows most youngins  aren't taught this very often. to caveman for the kids today. on the other hand he might fire up the tig. are you a farm boy that learned to tig on the farm? even today not likely. as already said by others go to school and learn at least the basics in all processes then no matter what the man hands you you can at least show him you have the ability. if he sees this and no attitude he will be impressed. also your grandpa will take notice. another little thing i teach the students i help out with is o/a aluminum. i'm learning it my self to the point i am beyond the basics of the process enough to show them how to do it. they ask me who does this today and i reply not many.  which is why it will look good when the prospective employer  asks if you do aluminum and you say mig, tig, and o/a. this little bit of lost art in a young person will blow his mind and he will probably think if you are willing to put forth the effort to learn what is not the generation norm you will be a worthwhile investment.   sorry for getting carried away.....good luck225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
