In case you missed him in the introduction section, here's Fume the dragon, a couple roses I made, and some trees. The only sculpture that used any kind of frame work was the trunk of the large tree. Other than that, these sculptures are made entirely of weld (excluding the disk at the base, had to start on something.) Attached Images
Reply:Neat!I'd love to actually watch someone work like this sometime.  I've only seen one other artist who works like that.Kevin Wilbanks
Reply:My dad does video work, and I've been trying to nail down a date that he can come to the shop to shoot some video of me doing this stuff. So far both our schedules have been to busy.Is that one of Kevin Wilbanks' work in your pic? Is it made out of weld?!?
Reply:I just googled him. Nice work he has. Creepy cool. Looks like he uses a combo of formed metal, and formed weld. I'm going to have to do that if I ever want to make sculptures biger than figurines.
Reply:wild, I've actually wondered if that could be done, neat
Reply:Here's a link to the page on his site where he describes the process. You'll probably be able to make more of it (than I could) from the pictures on that page.It looks like it could be a tedious way to work. If you ever get that video done, I'd be interested in seeing it.  Post a youtube link or something.
Reply:That absolutely is art!(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:Thanks RAW, kenklingerman, and strube!Kevin Wilbanks technique is the same as Nathan Cabot Hale's in his book "Creating Welded Sculpture"Where Wilbanks and Hale use a blow torch, I use a tig torch. I think it gives more control over fine detail. Also they both use armatures, I've only used one for the large tree so far. But I will be using them more in the future because they allow the forming of larger sculptures. I've also talked to another guy named Stephen Fitz-Gerald that does some similar work with mig. I do believe that tig has the advantage for long thin lines, mig is great for rapid build up, and the blow torch gives better control of surface texturing. I'm still an amature at this compare to these other guys.
Reply:Very nice work. Gotta say, you have a lot more patience than I do.
Reply:Great work...I love the tree third from the top.  I can only guess how long it took to build that one.  That Stephen Fitz-Gerald really does some awesome work as well. I can spend all day looking at his stuff.
Reply:thanks for the link RAW, that's really interesting
Reply:Yes, this takes alot of patience. A LOT. Tend to go cross eyed if you do it to long. If  I remember correctly the tree took 3-3 1/2 hours. It's actually not done in that picture. I still had one major limb to finish. It's for sale in a local art studio.
