This is a bumper I put together for my truck.  Materials:2''x6'' rect tubing1/2''x6'' strap (mounting flanges(probably overkill))1''x1'' sq gussets2''x2'' for the stepdiamond plate for traction on steps and to cap end and slanted partMost welding was with 7024 rod.  To attach the flanges to the bumper, used a couple passes of 6010, then 7018 to cap it.  Same process to attach step to bumper.
Reply:Nice!  Or as my sons would say SSWWEEETTTT!  I definetly like it better than the original!  I'd like to see what you could do as a replacement for my stock Dodge Cummins front bumper with a receiver hitch underneath for my winch! Something that would flow like yours.
Reply:Looks nice. My only issue is with the tow hitch. It looks way under built for a Class III hitch. Most Class III hitches the side plates mount directly to the heavy cross bar the receiver is mounted to. On yours it looks like the side plates just hold the bumper on. The cross bar looks to be just mounted to the bottom of the bumper. Those small diagonals probably don't add much to the towing capacity. If you are like most, you probably never tow so its no big deal. However, I wouldn't tow a medium to heavy trailer with that set up, from what I can see. It doesn't look much stronger than a standard bumper hitch..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:The bumper is the heavy crossbar.  I wouldn't tow a medium to heavy load with a colorado anyway.  I have built a hitch for one though.  Busy work at my old job...  It made any class 3 look like a toy.  It worked perfectly and looked like a factory unit, plus I don't ever have to worry about it failing.I'm wondering what the deal is with the extra lights.  Money to burn?  Or too much time on your hands?  I prolly would have just welded the receiver to the bottom and added a few gussets with holes for safety chains.  I think it looked good until you added the step.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Dont thing it is visible in the pics, but behind the d-rings, there is 1''x1'' that ties that step/hitch part into the mounting flanges. Also has 4 bolts on each side of the frame.Mainly I tow my 5'x10' tilt bed that may weigh 600 lbs or so and the most I've ever towed on that or will tow is my KFX700 4wheeler that weighs somewhere around 550 lbs dry.
Reply:I like it. The lights do help break up an otherwise generic look. I think I would have used some driving/fog type lights for the back up lights to help illuminate this while connecting a trailer at night. Just  a thought. Very nice job.Century Powermate 100 ( my first welder)Lincoln Precision TIG 185

Reply:Bumper looks good. I like the Step. If your like me and short it is quite handy Anywhoo it looks good. The lights are nice. maybe eventually you could upgrade to LED? Just a thoughtTJ
Reply:Crickertj - I'm actually getting the red LED lights for Christmas, so I'll post pics when I put them in. The lights and paint were all I had to buy, the metal was all from previous projects. (not shot tho, 6'3'')Dont think the pics show it, but I ended up putting a round6 plug on so I can just unplug it to remove if needed.

Reply:You need to make another and send it my way. My bro has a 85 F250 that need a front and rear bumper for offroad recovery when we take it to the lake.
Reply:This is my front bumper I made a few years back. It's just big box tubing, some 3/16 plate, some mounting brackets and a retread tire.http://weldingweb.com/attachment.php...1&d=1259894774Last edited by tzhauling; 12-10-2009 at 09:02 PM.
Reply:I have a deep ingrained fear of receiver hitches.  Yeah, I know it sounds hokeyI think my main issue is the leverage caused by the insert ball thingy.  It often extends well behind the bumper, and places a lot of stress on the receiver tube.  It wants to bend the whole thing downwards.Best designs I've seen, and you don't see them much anymore due to rear frame mounted gas tanks, were the ones with a longer tube extending under the bumper, and braced diagonally upwards against the truck frame, or the rear bumper braced in a similar manner..I may just feel this way because I pull fertilizer spreaders with clevis couplers, like simple farm implements.  Tongue weight can be maybe up to a ton depending on how it's loaded and how the auger is positioned when loading.  And the clevis is wide, and has around 4" free play vertically.  It likes to slam up and down on the hitch.  The main problem being the nature of the "trailer".  The whole thing is in a semi equal balanced state, no 60/40 split.  It's alternately tongue heavy, and tongue light.  Very squirrely on the highway at around 65My old truck I just removed the trailer ball, and dropped the clevis right on the bumper.  But the new truck will have to have some sort of receiver setup, and i'm not looking forward to modifying it Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
