There was a post recently (that I can't find) where somebody I think was using 2% Thoriated (red tip) tungstens for alluminium, is this correct? if so how would you prepare them? a sharp point? and how do they compare to other tungstens on alluminium? Sorry if I'm going over old ground.Thanks.
Reply:most grind them to a point an let ball on it's own(thats what i've done for the last 17 yrs)
Reply:depends on the welder. with the inverters you would grind to a point then add a small flat to take off the tip.what welder are you using ?? i have a TA-185 and use only 2% lanthanated. its great on AC and DC so i only have to keep one kind on hand and get the advantages of the lanthanated tungsten as well.Thoriated is the only tungsten that radio active and requires special handling. so i stay clear of it, no point in the extra risk when better/safer tungstens are available. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:I'm using a Murex 200 amp AC/DC inverter, I only use the red tops well upto now anyway, but the radioactive bit does worry me  Is there a "best" tungston to use for alloy ?
Reply:Here we go yet again about this radioactive trash talk..Read this again..http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=13220...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks Zap.  I would lose 32 sec. myself.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:the radioactive thing is just one of them things. not crazy like glowing in the dark kind of thing. but extra precautions should be taken. if it concerns you try lanthanated or cerated, both are substitutes for thorated.  a little reserch on them is not hard to do. try some other options, you might prefer them any way. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:I know welders, called Heliarc, in the 50's that used 2% and have no trouble, to this day.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:yep i learned heliarc(now tig) in the 70's... and im still here today AND I DON'T GLOWNOW I TIG IThey Zap if we start to glow then we all can go on the road an makes lotso bux(side shows at the fair)
Reply:I was taught that  pure tungsten and straight polarity to achieve the ball end. Then switch to reverse polarity to do the welding. 2% tends to discintigrate the tip during welding on AC w/hf.
