Hello guys and gals, I am Frank from sunny California. I just had a couple questions. I want to be an entry level welder. What certs do I need in order to get into the feild? Basically I would like to be a pipe welder so what would be the minimum to intermediate certs I need? I would like to get my foot in the door this coming Spring. How would I also practice at my house for the certs? I have a welder and what not just don't know where to start.
Reply:Find someone to teach you.  I mean be somebodys helper and climb your way up.  Nobody starts at the top, except the bosses kid when that boss really does not care about pride and earning your own way.Take some classes in whatever process your interested.Beat the bush for a chance to sweep the floor or whatever they need to get in the door. Welding is an ongoing learning process that never ends.   Good luck with your adventure.  Happy New year.AEAD 200LE, Lincoln precision tig 185, Millermatic 251, Spectrum 625 extreme, Victor torch , Smithy 1220LTD. and  Do all C-4 band saw ,  Always adding.
Reply:If you can pass 6-G open root up hill, with 6010, 7018 fill and cap. 6-G open root with Tig. Then maybe someone will take a look at you.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:First, your location? What skills do you have now? They is really no entry level postions with welding, you got to have cert/skills or you might be put in the general labor pool.
Reply:Thanks for the advise houseoffire Cep, correct me if I'm wrong isn't that a more advanced skill and not ENTRY LEVEL Jay o , san fran California, going to school soon for stick and tig , so basically alls I'm asking is what certs do I need when I am complete ? It would probably look good to an employer if you have some kind of papers.

Reply:Okay than ill master it
Reply:kind of off topic, but can I use an angle grinder to bevel the practice pipe? I don't have a pipe beveler .I am getting nervous now because I didn't think I would need the 6g cert . I will practice day and night because I have the time

Reply:Not many places will acept "your" certs. You need to learn how to pass a welding test anywhere you go, on the spot and that just gets you in the door. Every weld you make is a test after that, No freebie's welding pipe. If you bust two welds most places you'll get your stamp pulled, I've seen places/people that gave/got less or more chances though. Almost anywhere you go they will x-ray your first two production welds at the very least, and even 5% x-ray can turn into 100% x-ray in the worst case scenario.Going to a accredited welding school is your best bet. If you knew a welder that could show you the ropes, you could learn that way also.
Reply:Sweet post Cep, Now that I know I can bevel with a grinder I can get started right away. Now alls I have to do is build a 6g test stand and get to practiceing. Anyone build a home made test stand for 6g ?
Reply:woohoo thanks for your input.. I know I won't just get a job with just certs and I know I will have to test in order to get a job. The certs will help me just to get the interview so I can test, right ?  Originally Posted by woohooNot many places will acept "your" certs. Reply:Cep, Haha in the morning I'm preparing for some Sunday night Football .. Thanks for the link I have a couple of ideas now
Reply:I been looking at those pictures for an idea for a stand and I have a real good one, but there is one last piece to the puzzle . Does anyone know what kind of clamps are used there to hold the pipe?
Reply:Nvm stupid question
Reply:A quick and dirty way is to cut a U out of plate, weld say a 1/2 x 13 nut at the end of the U. Weld a piece of round stock to the head of a 1/2 x 13 bolt, for a T-handle.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Thanks cep  will do. I was trying to figure out ways to make something work, but I'll just go with what you recommended
Reply:How thick of a plate would you use, cep 1/8, 1/4 ?Last edited by Pwillis; 01-01-2012 at 10:33 PM.
Reply:depending on your skill level you might be better starting on beveled plate in various positions before you get into the pipe.trying to learn on 6G it going to be very tough.G
Reply:start off thin 1/4 yo 1/2" plate, whatever you can get, unless you think you need more practice with the filling.G

Reply:Originally Posted by CEPI would use at least 1/4, 1/2 would be better. If you use 1/4 don't make the throat too deep, and radius the bottom on the U, no 90 degrees corners.
Reply:Originally Posted by gordfraserthought we were talking 6010 root 7018 out here?so why would there be a "U"more like "\ /" with a 37.5 degree bevel and a 3/32" to 1/8" land.
Reply:WOW Schedule 40 pipe @ 6"=  53.00 per foot . I can't afford to keep buying pipe at that price espeacially for practice .. Please someone recommend something else.. Will used pipe work to practice 6G?
Reply:Keep shopping, that's outrageous! I know a guy who is starting to learn how to weld pipe, he bought a 21-feet length of 6 inch schedule 40 for $485.00 including tax.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:The tech school cuts all the 6" pipe in 12" sections. The kids then weld two together. If they F up their roots, they get to grind them out and redo them, ( usually several times). When done they grind the tops flush, stick the pipe back in the saw and recut the pipe, usually moving the cut 1" or so from the original and start the process all over again. In general there's very little "waste" with these. At worst they chop off the pipe right next to the original weld and you loose maybe an 1" off the total length. When they finally get it down, they can use new pipe if they need to test something, but all the practice pieces get reused as much as possible..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I was thinking of buying used pipe if it's in good condition at the scrap yard. If I do buy new pipe ill just buy a foot at a time and cut it up into 3" pieces and use them. Can I use any other pipe to substitute?
Reply:pwellis, man you can weld used pipe to practice a good way to practice is to weld the outside wall from one end to the other thicker wall the more welds to practice i would say work on a 3 bead cap with 7018 3/32 up hill the tie-ins (starts and siop) one of the most inprotant and weld position. just dont let these guys discourage you if there doing it you can bro.
Reply:6" pipeTry this:http://triengonline.com/store/page2.htmlall ready to go.G
