Reply:Welder155,  I welded copper-nickel pipe for the Navy from 1980 to 1989.  We used RN67 for filler material using the TIG proccess.  One thing you need to do prior to welding is make sure you kleen the base material good before welding, also between passes.  another thing you need to do is pay close attention to your inter pass temp. 250-300 max.  If you can Tig  carbon steel , stainless steel, I dont think you will have to bad of a time.  Hope this helps!  There is a member on here name Engloid, Klick on his name and check his web site out. He has some nice copper-nickel weld pictures that he did.Last edited by yardbird; 02-22-2008 at 08:52 AM.
Reply:Yardbird is correct.  Don't let it worry you.  With it having a lot of copper in it, you will need to weld it hotter than stainless or carbon steel.  It's like anything else, in that you weld it hot enough to melt smoothly.  If everything is done correctly, you will have some trash floating on top of the puddle, and it will most often push off to the sides of the puddle.  Similar to stick welding, where you learn to see the edge of the puddle that is covered by slag, you can do the same here with the stuff floating on the puddle.Don't let it worry you.  Copper nickel is a very forgiving metal.  Welding it to carbon steel can be a bit more difficult though.  Let me know if you have to do that and I'll go into more depth on what to expect.
Reply:oh ok thanks i was wondering about the trash i though it was probably scale.  ok so for cleaning just grind/sand  then clean with acetone?6G zirconium 702 GTAW 2" xxheavy6G P.E.D. carbon steel GTAW 2" xxheavy3G titanium Gr. 2 - Gr. 7 GTAW up to 3/4" 3G 316L stainless GTAW up to 1" 3G carbon steel GTAW up to 1" 3G Hastalloy GTAW up to 3/4"1G tantalum GTAW up to .060"
