Ok, I have an idea for a TIG project, but I am not going to say what it is because I want to be the first to build this. What I need to know is I am going to need some SS tubing which can withstand 250 - 500 PSI.  The SS will also be exposed to water. What type of SS tubing and gauge wall should I use for this project?  Also why type of SS filler should be used to TIG weld it together? Thanks in advance!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:To answer your question we need to know at what temperature and what diameter pipe and if you are using seamless or not.The tables I have make no distinction between 304,316 or 321 in Nominal Working Pressure.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:Something that may be of help:Nominal Bursting Pressure of Seamless Pipe is calculated with the following formula:P= 2 x S x t /DP= Pressure  Rating (MPa)S= Minimum Tensile Strength (MPa)t= Wall thickness (mm)D= outside diameter of pipeA good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:as said, a little more info will help get you a fuller answerthe pressures you're talking about are very low but what about service environment? is the water potable, salt water, hot salt water? stainless DOES corrodehttp://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/st...res-d_463.htmlthe filler would just be matched to the base alloy
Reply:Ok, I was not aware there were so many variables.  So to keep it simple I am going to be building a Potato Cannon. So air pressure.  Not sure about seamless or not.  I would like to use the least expensive for the build, but I want it to hold the pressure.  I am thinking I may hook up my dive tank to give it a little boost.Really I am concerned about using PVC.  I have already built one from PVC which shoots about 1100 feet straight up on 120PSI.  But I have always been concerned the day it fails and tears my hand off or hurts someone so I wanted to go stainless for safety and it would make a fun first TIG project. That's about it.  Let me know if you need to know anything else.Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!

Reply:Ok I have done this project. I first made my cannons out of alum. with a machined breach. I even made a jig to hold the breach and the length of tube where the ball valve is mounted. I used just a high pressure hose and the co2 tank. This launched the potato really far to where I could never find them. Then I was asked to make confetti cannons for a bar I bounce at for new years eve along with a mini-times sqare ball drop. You can see this on my site. The following year I needed more volume, so I built a reservoir out of 3/16 thick tubing and machined the caps that were 1" thick. I made sure the caps were pressed in a beveled before welding. I also got one of those mini truck tank release solenoids rated for 300psi. This allowed me to hold 300psi of x volume(I calculated it but I fogot the CC's) compressed air in the reservior. I had three confetti cannons linked to this thing. I was able to make a huge confetti mess in a mater of seconds when the New Year Hit.Here are a couple of pics. The first is just the tank/hose and cannons. The other is the reservoir and solenoid. I have also tested the reservoir to over 800 psi's with no problems.T.J.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt. Reply:Cool project!I like the fact you used aluminum.  Maybe I can do that instead.  I am not sure of I can weld it correctly yet.How thick was the aluminum you used and what should I use? Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:Alum thickness for the potato cannon = .125" Is that what you are asking. However, I did use a little thinner material for the confetti cannons. I just cannot remember right now.T.J.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt. Reply:Yes, I was wanting to know the wall thickness.  Do you think 1/4" would be over kill and how many PSI can I get away with the .125?Also, what is the best and easiest grade aluminum to use for welding in this project? Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:I used 6061. I cannot answer the psi cause I do not know. I do not know what you are using for a propellant.  T.J.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt. Reply:Ok, so 6061 how about a good filler?  I am going to be use air pressure from my compressor.  125 PSI.Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:I have used 12gauge 304 before and built one that shoots off of combustion.  I used hair spray in mine with an igniter.  I will see if i can dig up pics of it tomorrow.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:I asked why type of filler because there are a couple for both steel and ss.  And the filler rods I have here for aluminum start with a 4 and I thought I would ask.I am not a professional TIG welder, but I have run some nice beads on aluminum but I do don't know what alloy it was because it was given to me as scrap to practice on.  And before I attempt the cannon I figured I would get some 6011 and filler and practice to see how it works for me.So now that I am trying to do a real world project, I figure I would start asking more question.sI do not want to use steel pipe because I will be rinsing out the cannon after use, so my options are aluminum or ss.Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:Mike,  What machine do you have. Your filler you have for alum is most likely 4043.T.J.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt. Reply:Hi TJS,I have a Lincoln PT 225.  I just checked the filler again and it is 4043.  I have a 1lb of 3/32 and 1/16 each.  When I first got into TIG I went over to my LWS and told them I need wire in these sizes.  Not knowing there were different types and they never asked, just grabbed what they first found on the rack.So now for another question.  What is the difference between the 4043 and the 6011 and how many other types of welding wire are there for the aluminum?  I have run some nice beads with the 4043, but always had some of those small sand grains in the bead profile.  I cleaned the aluminum with a SS brush and acetone so maybe it was the filler.Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
