Thought you might enjoy a close up view of a this 1/8" SS lap joint which has been pulse fused with no filler.  I get a lot of attention with these welds at work.Picture was taken on "super macro" setting.Lincoln Electric Precision Tig 225PPS - Approxamately "5"RED Tungsten - 30 degree grindEnjoy!- ASOD Attached ImagesBeauty in the Bead!

Reply:Why did'nt you use any filler??That will never hold...Thats totally wrong...Blah blah..Nice job.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Very nice. The pulse frequency and tavel speed were balanced just right to give a very good pulse overlap, not too far apart, not too close, around 80% of each pulse is overlapped.Intersesting that the shielding was good on the lower 1/3 of the bead, and not so good on the top 2/3.  The colors are beautiful, but metallurigically not desireable since the oxidised SS will have reduced corrosion resistance.  No big deal if the appllication is not corrosive.  Maybe you're not using a gas lens, or flow rate too high or low? What were the pulse settings? You said the frequency was 5 pulses per second (pps), how aboutn the peak current, background current, and the peak time or pecent?

Reply:Andy, pulse is a great feature and it has its place but STILL only seat time will make you a great welder...not some fancy feature on a $3,000 plus machine. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:I'm looking forward to the video. I have no idea of how many hundred pounds of stick electrode and Mig wire I've burned but never had any reason to TIG anything. I'm looking forward to see how it is done right.

Reply:I work in a food processing plant and haven't seen any weld that remotely resembles what's pictured (And probably never will, nice work!!!) When dealing with food processing environment, weld must be completely closed to prevent bacteria growth, etc.You mention using a Red Tungsten @ 30 degree grind but not the size. 1/16th? 0.40?Miller MaxStar 150 STHTIG Advice From Co-Worker - "Just don't burn a hole so big I can't fill it."Originally Posted by OldgeezerI work in a food processing plant and haven't seen any weld that remotely resembles what's pictured (And probably never will, nice work!!!) Reply:I would make that my aviator too!DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:ummm, that's supposed to be "avatar" David. An "aviator" is someone flying a plane.  The general consistency and workmanship of the welds is v-e-r-y nice, but like Pulser mentioned, the purty rainbow colors indicate oxidation of the stainless steel.  That oxidation could be cosmetic for the intended purpose, or it could be substantial enough to class the part as NG.
Reply:One thing to keep in mind, is that it is EXTREMELY hard to take a picture of a weld and capture it in its true form.  Colors tend to turn out how ever the camera's processor interprets it to be.  In SUPER MACRO mode, the SLR wants to focus on the center of the object in relation of the picture as a whole.  The result most of the time is shadows...color differentiations...blurryness outside the center-of-view...etc...etc...etc.  The welds in person have a completely uniformed appearance and HAZ.  I'm sure those of you who have an SLR camera that takes not MACRO pictures but SUPER MACRO pictures understand what I'm saying.  It's almost an art to capture a quality weld in a digital format.  It took about 45 pictures from different angles...lighting...shutter speed...etc. to come up with the ONE picture you see.- ASODLast edited by ASOD; 03-04-2008 at 06:45 PM.Beauty in the Bead!
Reply:Man that looks nice, now I want a pulser for my tig. I remember the first time I tigged stainless (was for Taco Villa) and our hot stuff tig welder came in that afternoon and wanted to know how in the world I made it look that nice. I didn't have the heart to tell him I had never done it before, but from then on I did all the stainless. My "training" was reading the procedure handbook of arc welding section on tig welding stainless (I didn't tell him I was using dc instead of the ac he was always using). I used the same technique I use for O/A welding mild steel. For me tigging the stainless was even easier. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
