hey guys just bought a new ( to me ) cold saw. I need to know how many teeth i need to cut stainless steel square tubing. Usually 2mm thick.Am i right in saying the slowest speed with the most teeth blade the right way to go? Cheers in advance Attached Images
Reply:Cold saws are great but one dra back is that you need to have lots of blades. It all depends on what you are cutting. For tube you will have to have lots of little teeth. For solid you will need larger teeth. Some times the teeth are arranged in a triple chip patern and the like. I would look ub the manufacturers specifications. I love my Scotchman. It is like a magic wand when it comes to cut lists. And a 45 is a 45, you can pretty much build from the cut.Welding everything, from the crack of dawn to a broken heart.
Reply:how many teeth depend on the diameter of the blade. a 200 tooth in a 9" blade is not the same as a 200 in an 11" blade, heres a good source for blades  http://www.vansantent.com/cold_saw_blades.htmand heres a good guide to selecting which blade http://www.vansantent.com/cold_saw_chart.htmgeneral rule of thumb is you want to have at least 2 teeth in the material at all times, so the thinner the material the more teeth needed...Last edited by turbocad6; 01-17-2012 at 11:09 AM.miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
Reply:I suggest that you purchase a high speed steel blade until you have had some experience with it.  The carbide tipped blades are superior since you can double the cutting speed. The increase in price is worthwhile but only if you do not abuse the blade and your work is secure.    In one shop I worked in there were two cold saws.  The one all of us used had a high speed steel blade and the one the handrail guy had to himself had a carbide toothed blade.
Reply:are you talking about a carbide toothed blade on a wet cold saw or a dry saw? the wet cold saws don't go fast at all and are flooded with coolant, didn't even know you could use a carbide blade in there...miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
Reply:Yes there are carbide blades for cold saws... frightfully expensive.
Reply:The actual industrial automated cold saws use segmented carbide blades.Tim Beeker.

Reply:thanks for the info guys  i was sad to find out blades are $200-250 lol ah well atleast cutting will be fun and easy
Reply:Holy crap! How big are the blades? I get 14 inch Scotchman blades for 100 bucks. I think they have 10" blades, not sure if they will fit on your saw. Do you know a good blade sharpening guy? I get them sometimes for 50 bucks from him. used when he has them. You will need a good blade sharpening guy too anyway, unless you are gonna sharpen yourself.Welding everything, from the crack of dawn to a broken heart.
Reply:Thanks Capozzoli thats a hot tip, i should shop around and choose a sharpening guy. I generally choose the suppliers that i can best get a long with and have the time of day for me. Used blades would be pretty good idea ( after being sharpened anyway). I think my saw is 14inch diameter in metric is 350mm.Ill shop around too. But truly thank you
Reply:I use 300, 350mm on mine. I pick them up off Ebay. Some used and some new. $30 to $65.Tim Beeker.
Reply:Oh, and $25 to sharpen from True cut in Ohio.Tim Beeker.
