It's cold and windy with snow on the ground, so I decided to take a trip around the InterwebCapturing rare images from the far reaches of the planet...........I present, gentle readers.................THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I'VE EVER SEENA foldup mobile cattle corralDo ya suppose it be street legal???? Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I've seen a couple in use around here and one even going down the road way faster than I would think was safe. I guess it's farm equipment so with a warning triangle on the back it's probably legal to move.  The main problem I see is you're going to have a heck of a time moving it after the first cow that jumps or climbs about half way over and bends a panel up.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X

Reply:Those portable corrals are quite common around here.  In GA,  any farm related trailer is street legal, without the need of a tag or any other licensing requirement, as long as the axles are not spring mounted. Overwidth and length variances are given as well. Most likely all that would be required is a slow moving vehicle sign (to keep it under the 25 mph mark) and/or a flashing light on the rear.Never seen them haul peanuts,Samm?  You might see 5 steerable 4 wheel wagons coupled together, maybe more.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Over here in Germany they MOVE their cows in a pen behind a tractor on wheels.  They take them from the barn to the pasture in a pen on wheels.  The cows walk behind the tractor.  Maybe 15 cows.  Strangest thing I ever saw.  I haven't seen one in a long time.
Reply:Go over to OKC west they had 3 or 4 of them setting out front a couple weeks ago.

Reply:That is a nice lookin' "kitty", Samm!!! Only question I have is does the corral have to be on good level ground? We all know that's why you cut the slots in the panels you built.                                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Actually, in theory, this isn't as off the wall as it seems.   Notice, no fixed posts, if an animal kicks, the whole thing gives a little.   Not the same, as stringing panels between fixed posts.Sheep guys have been doing this for years here in California, send three guys out, fence and cross fence an eighty-acre alfalfa field in three hours or less ....   leave them for a few days, get the aluminum panel corrals set up in a few minutes,  move everybody on to the next field.I will note, more and more cattlemen are considering how easy the animals are to handle, when they make cull decisions.   I first ran into this back in the 70's,,,,,,   a guy I would sometimes  cowboy for, had absolutely no problem consigning some of his best cows, conformation, genetics, weaning weight, whatever, to the butcher.   I thought that was terrible, but as he said, if you can't handle them easily, cost effective, what good are they????

Reply:Pawnee has cinnamon rolls will have to remember that. The last couple sales calves at OKC west and Woodward were hard to follow .85 to 1.20 for what looked like similar pens(weight within 50 lbs, same size frame, condition equal). Haven't made it to Pawnee yet but now that I know about the buns I will. Been hitting more barns in Ok and Tx lately.

Reply:These are the commercially available panels.Don't know the price, weight, or structural member size.  They look a little underbuilt to me, specially the horizontal reinforcement.  The tub will be in the corral used for daily feeding, and subject to a lot of abuse.  The animals will push each other as hard as they can until something stops the animal being pushed.  It gets pretty violent, and stuff gets torn up.I think I can handle making a round frame, but bending the sheet metal to fit will be the challenge.  Just putting it under stress and welding it doesn't seem to be the answer.  I'd rather have the sheet formed to the radius.  Whether there's a fab shop in Tulsa or OKC capable of rolling the sheet is another question.  The recession has hit a lot of these places hard Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/This guy likes to push just about anything out of his way  So anything I look at is with him and the others in mind  That be 2100lbs(probably closer to 2400) of animal pushing another 1000lb animal aroundWARNING:  THIS THREAD MAY CONTAIN NUDIE COW PICS Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Samm, you can duplicate the curved thing, very close, just set posts in a radius, approx. 4' or so apart.   Cows don't care, if it's a perfect curve or not.   I am looking thru my picture files right now, for the spring-loaded latches I used to build ...

Reply:Oh well, it's ok.  Don't really want to offend anyone.Found a place closeby that has a plate roller that can handle up to 3/16 plate.  He'll roll 4  5X 10 sheets for $75.  Material will run around 47 cents/lb Called on the premade panels................$289 apiece  They're made with 14ga sheet, and 2x3 rectangular tubing.  THAT'S ALMOST 1200 DOLLARS!!!!!!!!I'm thinking a little Southern Engineering is in order here"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I'd like to see those latches.  Preventing the gate from coming back at you is a real problem with these things.  I've seen a million designs but really don't like any of them.  Closest thing I've liked is a "pawl" style thingy with angle stops on the inside of the tub every few feet where the latch can catch as you advance the gate."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Samm, still looking.   I know it's there somewhere, just can't figure out where I put it.  I also know, I posted it up somewhere before, Miller or Hobart forum, problem is I've gone thru so many usernames can't find them.   I'll look around out back tomorrow, see what  I have lying around, maybe even have some partial built ones to take pictures of.   Otherwise, I'll just make a drawing, and post it up.   If I recall correctly, it's a Teco brand latch, I originally copied, but the one with a 1" solid bar, not the wimpy 1/2" square stuff. You can also do a roundabout with latches on the fence, only problem is, you have to pull each one back to bring the gate back all the way, vs. tying one rope to the handle on the gate, and pulling it all the way back at once.

Reply:Sam,You might try Tulsa Tube Bending...we've used them when we needed some 4" sch. 40 long radius elbows, and we're in Dallas.  I'm not sure of their max capacity (probably doesen't matter, you're looking at what? 1-1/2" or 2" sch. 40) or current rates but it's an idea.Another thing you might look into is bending them yourself.  A little at a time every 2-3 ft with a harbor freight pipe bender, like someone else mentioned, them cows don't care if it's perfectly round.  If you don't have a bender I strongly suggest the air/hydraulic...the pump handle one takes forever and give you a reason for new swear words.Just my $.02
